Recent expansion: CCP lost it nerve, playing it safe?

Well I like the jump gate animation - but that's as far as the latest expansion has impacted on my Eve experience (oh and somebody moved the un-dock button)

This was a bit like the previous expansion, I didn't really notice much change. Now don't get me wrong, I'm happy if person X has a new feature they have been waiting for, and this has really made a difference to Eve for them (and I'm not disputing there is a long list of changes in the Dev posts).

However, it seems to be that CCP are playing it safe. Where is the exciting challenging new feature and elements of the game that the players of Eve hunger after? (ok there was the introduction of Dust, in fairness).

Again, from my perspective, it seem that the vocal hostility that occurs whenever CCP announces something challenging, has rather damped down CCP enthusiasm for taking risks.

So here's my challenge CCP. Takes some risks, implement some of the bolder idea in the forums, stuff the screams from the player who hate change (you can't hear them in space anyway).

So in the next expansion, be bold, add new stuff, upset players, bring back some excitement about expansions

There is no new game mechanics ever since the introduction of wormholes.

And no1 remembers how long that was.

Props to ccp though, their really improving their game, and i do think that befre introducing more stuff they should be fixing what's broken.

I'm mortally offended my your accusation sir! Megathons at dawn.

LOL well it no secret I would like that bloody door to open, or the chance to explore some abandoned station.
However, there's some lovely ideas like Ring mining (could use Ventures in losec) to fully Planetary Interaction Empires which would only add to the breadth of the game.

March 2009. Do the maths.

…since then, we go PI, a complete revamp of sovereignty, incursions, time dilation, drastically revamped factional warfare, a complete revamp of crimewatch and bounties, completely revamped exploration.

Even if you remove the “it was there before, but in name only” then there's still pretty much one new mechanic per expansion.

Only spaceship gameplay expansion I expect to see in next 18 months is Star Citizen. Maybe couple more games (like Star Conflict). EVE is obviously on cruise control and I cannot call those debugs "expansions" - the only actual gameplay "expansion" I've seen during last two years was drone eating AI. 6 months of development resulted in minesweeper with loot bukkake in 120mil worth Helios in low-sec for 5-10mil per hour after month(s) of skills training? No, thank you, still cannot call that "expansion" as it affected maybe 1.5% of players (I doubt there are more than 7k explorers).

You are too young to remember :18months: where we didn't get anything new or fixed for the most part and players rioted and demanded the iteration releases we are getting now until stuff gets shored-up.

I would enjoy a Bitcoin like system of introducing a number of new systems periodically.

Say 5 new systems per week, just jumpgates being discovered and activated by exploration to throw players into virgin lands.

At the moment, CCP is fixing what needed to be fixed. They cannot add as much content as they would like. I'm sure once the ship rebalance is over, CCP will have more people available for creating content (LIKE A (F WORD) SKIN FOR MY ABSOLUTION AND A HAT).

But yeah...CCP haven't added anything special for some time.

Which ironically I'm hearing is PvE based.

And the most popular MMO is PvE with consensual PvP. If that game has the same, EvE may well have competition in the space sim genre.

Which is a good thing, as without competition games get stale.

You forgot the stripper pole for the CQ, I've got loads of exotic dancers sat in my hangar getting fat because there's no damn stripper pole.

On topic, CCP is pretty busy making sure that existing stuff works properly before introducing mind blowing new content like the stargate construction possibility they showed at fanfest.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

It was actually only one expansion cycle, so like, 6 months. The Incarna one. Before Incarna, we had Incursions (massive expansion) and afterwards, we had Crucible (my favourite expansion of all time). Incarna was just terribad organization, if they had released time dilation and the other three CQs in the same cycle (oh, and didn't have the micro-transactions, greed is good leak, GPU meltdowns and removing the ship spinning), then it arguably would have been the best expansion ever. Both time dilation and the other three CQs were scheduled for Incarna but just didn't fit in-time. Basically, CCP screwed up really really bad, for one expansion cycle.

From what I can gather, this is the beginning of a set of bigger expansions coming over the next few years.

After 10 years, EVE has become a little scattered and broken. There is a big focus now on fixing things and creating a stable base to build on.
