probes appear on map not where you drop them

happens to me a lot, you are flying around with solar map active, jump, drop scanner probes but they appear not where you dropped them but somewhere in the middle of solar system. F10, grid view, you see them on grid, go back to map, they are still in the middle of nowhere.
Missed a kill because of this sh*t too as I wasnt aware of where my probes really are.

The probes are where you dropped them, but show up on the map at the sun ... not really sure how that's difficult to work out.

With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

they are not always at the sun, sometimes far far away from the sun in nowhere.

The probe target position defaults to the center of the map - which is usually but not always the position of the star, which is for the most part optimal for most users most of the time. I always began a scanning procedure from the center where the most celestials usually are.

In any case the probes themselves don't move to the target position until you scan, so its not like they are moving away from your safe automatically and announcing themselves to the victim prematurely.

The default probe position showing in the system map should be right next to your ship when launched, plain and simple. Having the probes appear anywhere else on the map is not only confusing, it's also immersion breaking and quite honestly, just plain old sloppy lazy programming.

Seems to me the different CCP teams or programmers working on the probing / exploration mechanic changes didn't communicate with each other.

Either that or as usual, they just quickly threw it all together in order to meet the expansion deadline which was already delayed anyway. I really don't see any reason why they couldn't have delayed it a bit longer and fix / debug various issues.

A few years ago CCP gave the playerbase their solemn vow of a commitment to excellence. That no expansion would be released before it was ready. To always run everything on the test server first and then listen and re-act accordingly to all feedback comments.

Obviously that was just public relations doing some good old fashioned damage control with no intention of compliance.

I disagree entirely, its an extremely handy deliberate feature, and not at all sloppy, and like the mouse only probe handling, suggests a competent UI designer was involved in that particular streamlining choice.

it fixes the default positioning of the probe targets for every time I arrive at a highsec gate that is miles off plane and outside the widest orbit. It also defaults my probe target to a useful position in the case where I am using a safe in lowsec, since I tend to use wide out of plane safes if I have them. Both of those cases require me to make 3D shifts of the probes which are time consuming.

for me both of those cases are far more frequent than me not wanting to start probing from the center where statistically most of the celestials are and hence statistically most of the signatures are.

What's the problem? They are still launched where your ship is, so if you want to do some sneaky stuff it's all right. And moving them around a bit really shouldn't be much of a hassle.

[edit] i guess the 'problem' is that people think their probes are where they show on the map, which they are not. Only after hitting scan that is so. But that has been the case before, so i don't really see an issue here.[/edit]

it absolutely does NOT do this.
it does this only the first time you launch probes when you log in. after that, it always launches probes at the same position relative to your ship as when you last pulled them.
this is EXTREMELY bad if you jump from a 100au radius system to a 10au radius system and now cant even see your probes until you zoom way way out to find them.

Doesn't happen to me. Happy to accept that it is a bug or "sloppy programming" if it is happening to you.

When you launch the probes they appear in space at your ship location
When you open the system map it shows you your ship location

When you look for your probes which we have already verified are where your ship is........ hang on a second ......


While I appreciate that having the default location be Centre of system or wherever is quite handy for some people in certain circumstances, from a purely logical point of view, having a location other than where they actually are makes no sense.

Personally, having to zoom out to see the whole system to try and track the little buggers down is starting to get annoying. I was quite happy with them showing up where I was at. It made sense at least.

I would suggest putting in a check-box option for -
Probe Default location on Map Centre
so that if you deselect that, the probes show at the ship location.

Not hard, keeps everyone happy.

just show them where they actually are, like it was before.
Personally I think its more a sloppy programming and a bug than an intended feature.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. I read about it somewhere in patch notes. When you launch them, what you see in system map it's their default destination. I don't know about you but when I was on exploration the first thing after launching drones were to put them into constellation (check), and then center the constellation on the center of the system (check), and then scan.

Seems like a time saver to me.

OK, I don't know if it helps or breaks combat probes.

When you launch them via the scanning window (ie. the two formation buttons) they display near the center of the system (the star) on the system map.

When you launch them via the Probe Launcher module (F1, F2, etc.) they display at your position in the system on the system map.

I hope this clears up the confusion because this is an incredibly useful feature despite how small it is.

I can see where this would have been useful, when prior to this new system you were not TOLD EXACTLY WHERE TO LOOK for each sig in any given system, so you would start your search with a wide coverage spread pattern from centre outwards to cover as much of the system as possible in one scan.

Thats not relevant now with the "jump in to system, ship auto-detects all sigs and tells you roughly where they are" system that is now in place.

The Auto-Sun default WOULD have been useful when you HAD to start with a System-wide scan first, Its utterly useless now since your first move is to centre on any of the known approximate locations you see as soon as you open the system map.

If it is the same thing I have found the situation is most easily seen when going from a large radius system to a small radius system.

You launch custom a probe setup is a system with a 60AU radius and scan out a sig near the edge of that system. Then you move to a system with a 30AU radius, launch probes via F1, and the probes display past the "edge" of the current system.

Nerfing High-sec is never the answer. It is the question. The answer is 'YES'.
