Shield Graphical Effects!

tl;dr first: More shiny shield effects, with location based hits and stuff. (very cool)


Okay, so I was showing a friend eve the other day, and whilst I was under fire he asked "where are your shields?". Proceeding to turn on my shield hardeners, I zoomed in and said "there they are!", to which he said "oh.. right."

I'm simply wondering what It would take for us to get dynamic shielding effects. I.e. when a portion of the shield gets hit, that part lights up in a shield-like fashion. Once your shields are depleted, the effect stops and weapon fire is allowed to pass through the shield as it currently does.


  • Is this technically possible? (dev halp me out here?)
  • Would eve players want it?
  • Would it be too demanding on the client? (lag?) (It should probably have a setting to disable)



A question I also ask you people: Bubble shields? or model hugging as they are now? Personally I think weapons fire hitting a shield bubble and then once depleted, passing through to the hull would be way cooler.

Take examples from any games or movies/series that highlight what you would like to see in the game. Also welcome if you think the effect is fine as it is.

A few of my examples listed below of what I would love to see.

Yeah, why not. It would be pure visual effect so no server performance hit and if your machine cannot handle it just switch it off (assuming devs would give us an option for it).

I wish you could turn off shield / armor / TC / Sensor booster effects separately.
It's just very annoying to see those effects that do nothing.

P.S. and clouds too.

Nexus The Jupiter incident also has one of the best shield effects. That thing I really miss in EvE.

Okay, so post vids/pics of what you would like to see in eve then. Also, I know the V3 project will allow this sort of thing to be possible. Whether it gets implemented or not is a different matter. Also , things seen at fanfest are never a guarantee of things getting developed, or even on the roadmap at all.

I love Nexus, such an amazing game, graphically and gameplay-wise. +1 to this, pretty much exactly what we need.

that's the thing with comparing eve to games that are being launched. it's like comparing a car that has just been built vs a car that had its engine replaced without coming to a stop for more than 30 minutes.

With V3 Shaders and DirectX11, all these things and more... can be yours!

Seriously though, Project V3 All The Things. It's not an official title that I know of, it's just one I made up. Once everything's V3 and we get that new lighting model, art is promising amazing things will be possible. As you see in the links people have posted, they already want shields to be visible and they also want hull damage to be more visible than it is, as evidenced by other fanfest videos I'm just not interested in linking.

They demo'd both shield and armour hits at fanfest.... Once they'd shown them the general consensus on what players want the art team to be doing was "sod custom ship skins, give me explosive effects"

We are instead comparing it with games that have been out for like 4 years...

Actually, Eve used to have Oval shield. Then we got a graphical downgrade. Same as cloaking. Same as gating before they implemented the new one in Odyssey. Graphical downgrade happened to a lot of things, don't ask me why...Roll

I miss the old cloak. The fade is not even close to the cool effect of the sweep. I really don't get why they changed it to what we have now :(

You really think someone would do that? Just log into EvE and tell lies?
