Curious about patches / multiple downloads

Hello all.

I have noticed many times and yet never known the reason for the number of separate downloads involved with each patch.

For example, first I open eve and there is a 6mb "new build" download.
http://clip2net.com/s/5g3YaB

Then the update window opens and downloads the patch, in this example 23mb.
http://clip2net.com/s/5g3Z1n

Then we have the launcher download, though no size is given.
http://clip2net.com/s/5g3Zlz

And finally the launcher initiates another download, this time 12mb.
http://clip2net.com/s/5g3ZWf

I wondered what the new build was if it wasn't the launcher, and also why it is always exactly 6mb? And likewise I was curious why the launcher seemed to download part of itself and then the rest later?

An inquisitive mind would like to be educated. As an ignoramus it doesn't seem... smooth is maybe the word. I wouldn't like to say inefficient as I imagine there must be some method to the madness.

Don't forget to add in the repair.exe step, I have to run that every time there is a 6mb download. oh well.

See I only ever see the last step once cause I use the launcher from the get go so I haven't a clue what you're talking about xD

Are you saying it only appears like the last step but still has staggered downloads, or that it only appears to download once? It would seem peculiar to be downloading 29mb or more (to stick with the above example) simply because of starting the client a different way so I would imagine the same data is getting to you somehow.

I can't say I have had any problems with a corrupt client since the initial problems when the new launcher appeared. With the binary it's all been sweet. I'm simply curious to understand the process of the split downloads.

Pure guess here, but to me it seems that you get multiple downloads by just running the eve executable because it also has to verify/update the launcher before applying the actual patch. By using the launcher to begin with, that step is probably skipped or just runs in the background? Again, just guessing.

I typically use the executable myself, the main reason being that my account list keeps getting wiped out whenever the launcher gets updated, which is a pain. But, I do close out of the client and use the launcher when I get the new build message. Then I use the executable again :)

I'll try that next time and see how it goes, thank you. I'll keep an eye on the network traffic if the launcher doesn't show the separate downloads. If there is only one you may well be right.

After initial launcher derp on release day I never had any problems with updates. But I also never had any problems with updates since the day I started to play (2011) while every expansion and patch caused forums bleeding from rage and tears.

Try using launcher as it is intended and see if things get better. It may be derpy but whole client side is based on that derpiness now so getting around it may cause derp-incompatibility problems for you. And there is always support ticket if anything else fails.

Well documented! This behaviour is actually a disconnect between my team, which handles the EVE Launcher and another which handles the continuous integration system for the EVE Client.

When you start up the ExeFile.exe and it notes it's out of date, it will download an installer for the old version of the EVE Launcher. This version of the EVE Launcher then proceeds to update itself new version, which then detects that an update needs to be applied.

If you didn't access the game via the ExeFile.exe you would find that you wouldn't need to continue to do this download/downgrade/upgrade loop continuously.

I'll sort out the downgrade/upgrade loop if you can tell me why you login via the ExeFile.exe method.

I login Via the exefile method because
I use junctions and using junctions I have several separate icons on my desktop
one for each character [well some have more than 2 icons]
but
they all have separate settings and have the character set for me to load
so I double click the icon and enter password and then I just enter for that character - all my settings are right for that login [empire / 0.0 / market etc]

The login screen remembers all usernames used on this computer. The launcher remembers one. I still launch the launcher initially for potential updating, so I have no complaints about how updates are delivered. Just saying besides updates the launcher is currently an inferior system for actually accessing the game, so I avoid it as much as possible.

That's pretty much what I guessed, since it's the most common reason people tell me, so thank you for letting me know Smile

Do you have 'quit after logging in' set for the Launcher?

I do something similar for my Mac installation. The clones, as we call them on the Mac, bypass the launcher. But when an update is pushed out and I run a clone I get them message "A new build is available, do you want to download it?". That is my cue to quit and run the main install, the one I made the clones from. That runs the launcher which downloads the update. After that I just go back to running the clones, no need to even log in with the main install. All the clones reference the files of the main install which just got updated, so they all work.

The launcher remembers all of my various account user names, so not sure why yours wouldn't be.
