We have a winner!

Danny Boyles Sunshine is one of the best SciFi movies ever made that flew under the radar.

A Clockwork Orange - Mind-blowing when it first came out. I'd been a big fan of Brian Aldiss,

Anthony Burgess, not Brian Aldiss.

All of the films I consider good sci-fi have already been listed. Akira is all kinds of awesome. Moon is hugely entertaining, and I think Sam Rockwell is a massively talented and underestimated actor. Blade Runner looks great and sounds better.

The only one I would argue with is THX1138 - what a pile of steaming, angst ridden, pseudo-arthouse, self indulgent elephant dung.

Yes, that was Burgess for A Clockwork Orange. Thanks for the correction. That said, I'm also an Aldiss fan. I read his Galaxies Like Grains of Sand when I was a youngster, and that work set my compass and standards for the sense of wonder and mind-blowing perspective that I demand from good sci-fi.

For me, that's the attraction of the EVE universe. It's an immense, evolving story in which we all have a hand. People who become bored wit hit simply haven't the imagination or the inclination to find satisfaction in participation. Most games hand you stuff: the story line (if there even is one), goals, endgame, etc. That's boring.

Also - agree with your assessment of THX1138.

Most moving Sci-fi on a low budget: The Brother From Another Planet

Best recent Sci-fi: District 9 (honorable mention for recent Judge Dredd).

Not already Mention Sci-Fi: Apollo 18, scared the **** out of me, and I liked the style of the documentary

You just can't get better Sci-Fi: Star Wars (the original and not f*cked about version)

Although there are only a couple of movies involved, the whole Dr. Who series is brilliant.

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

Dune.

Blade runner.

Star Trek movies. The first one ever, I,e, Star Trek: The motion picture, is probably my favourite of the whole lot.

Honourable mention - End of Evangelion (not many directors/writers willing to say '**** you!' to the audience for not liking their original ending... except maybe Lucas)

watch rebirh project, if you haven't.

plus, adding to honorable mentions I will add the Space Opera genre in general, and in a more specific tone, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and the Banner/Crest of the Stars saga.

Oh man, I was such a fan of that short story by George RR Martin when it was in Omni Magazine. Too bad the film was so different and sucked !

Bro you just blew my mind. I didn't even know there was a short story, so now I have to try and track it down.

This also reminded of a pretty interesting and ahead of it's time T.V. mini series called "Wild Palms" that Olliver Stone produced (I think). It was based on a comic strip which I still haven't been able to track down, but I remember it being pretty cool for some of the subject matter it covered. Also adding to the list-- Ghost in The Shell Solid State Society as well as the Stand Alone Complex series.

Lastly, awesome Ellison Quote.

The best movie here which has zero special effects but has a gripping story is 'The Man from Earth'. Do yourself a favor, watch this one.

Pitch Black / Chronicles of Riddick
Predator
Predators
Alien
Farscape *.*
Space Cowboys
Starship Troopers
Wing Commander

Battlefield LA - I want those 2 hours of my life back. Bad.
Screamers (screaming for a plot)
Independence Day (loved it when it came out but over it now)

Safety Not Guaranteed (really want to see...)
Outland
Dark Star
Book Of Eli (?)

Mad Max (post apocalypse)
Big Trouble in Little China (US Kung Fu)
TRON / TRON: Legacy (cyberpunk)
Strange Days (cyberpunk)
Watchmen (comix)
A Clockwork Orange / Full Metal Jacket - more like reality shows but I served in the Corps so maybe biased
All Terminator Films (cyberpunk)
eXistenZ (or Exsitance?) - Will look it up. Sounds like erection meds tho'...
Avatar: The last airbender - Fantasy. Like Dragon Ball Z in a lot of ways
12 Monkeys - Dunno how to classify this. Certainly a weird and good movie. Not really sci-fi imho
Future World (GREAT soundtrack. Not sci-fi. At all.)Was thinking of "Cool World" - will check it out
Ghostbusters ("Why worry?")
Evolution (stoner movie... funny though... when you're high...)
The Thing
The Matrix Trilogy (cyberpunk)
Logans Run (good movie... not sure if counts)
Ghost in the Shell (cyberpunk)
Soilent Green - (insert profanity string here)
Idiocracy (reality show)
Johnny Mnemonic (cyberpunk - Let's hope Neuromancer is better. Prob only book I like over Ender's Game / Speaker of the Dead. Liked Johnny Mnemonic but maybe b/c I read it first and looked past the black light neon-spray paint gangs and Ice-T)

Gogela,

You are starting to get into the subgenres but what would define a movie as being a Sci-fi related movie? (yes that's a can of worms to open :) )

Post apoc is a standard theme in Sci Fi related material. 12 Monkeys would fit in the realm of Sci fi in relation to time travel.

Best way to look at it is basically, does it feel like a sci fi reality or ideal, then class it as sci fi.

Fair point. I'm no expert. I guess I was shooting from the hip and not really thinking about it...

I think I must have seen a few hundred sci-fi films, both English-language and foreign. English-language films seem to be pretty well covered, so I'll recommend some foreign language films that I thought were pretty good:

  • STALKER (Russian classic)
  • Los Cronocrimenes (aka Timecrimes, Spanish)
  • Delicatessen (post-apocalyptic French comedy)
  • Hell (German film, post-apocalyptic global warming)
  • Sleep Dealer (Mexican film)
  • Solyaris (1972 Russian film Solaris is a re-make of)
  • Alphaville (1965 French film)

Some English language sci-fi releases, with moderate to low budgets I'd recommend:

  • Melancholia
  • Another Earth
  • Being John Malkovich
  • The Mist

And did nobody mention Source Code?

The only movies listed in this thread I haven't seen, and aren't those yet to be released are:

The Ice Pirates
The Tripods (technically, a TV series based on a book, not a movie)
The Time Machine (1960)
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Green Lantern (superhero film)
End of Evangelion (Japanese anime)
Ghost in the Shell (Japanese anime)
First Men in the Moon
Akira (Japanese anime)
Invaders from Mars
When Worlds Collide
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Darkside of the Moon
Safety Not Guaranteed

Ice Pirates is awesome but probably not the same way as some of these others. It's dated and full of cheese. Yummy cheese. and ice theft!

And if you love that one, check out Galaxy Of Terror. It's hard to beat a Hammer film. :)

Thanks OP. Love this thread. Now I know who my fellow old people are. LOL
