Hello All,
I have had this idea of mine for a week or so and I finally decided to ask the eve community and CCP what it thinks.
The idea is to remove the slots for rigs completely. Rather than a number of slots, you have a list window. Inside that window will be all the rigs you have outfitted to your ship, their bonuses/penalties, their calibration cost and your remaining calibration. This new system would have the number of rigs on your ship based solely upon the size of the ship and how much calibration you have compared to how much calibration is used. As an example: Hybrid collision accelerator rigs cost 200 calibration. The new system would allow you to only have two rigs on a 400 calibration vessel. However, if you wanted to increase the tank and capacitor of your ship for tanking, you could fit 1 anti-elemental pump for each element (50 calibration each) to augment damage resistance and two capacitor control circuit (100 calibration each) to increase your cap stability with more cap heavy modules (for a total of 6 rigs) I understand that this will change the fittings of many ships across New Eden but I personally believe that this wouldn't break the balance of ships or eliminate the necessity of specific roles in fleet operations. By having a max calibration and differing calibration costs based on the bonus to the ship (more potent rigs have a higher calibration cost), you would eliminate many if not all the issues with having too many rigs. Other balancing factors would be reduced performance from similar effect stacks (such as Magnetic field stabilizers or Armor hardeners) The main reason for the change, is that every ship(if you plan on doing well) must have a very specific fitting, leaving very little in the way of customization. I believe that having this change would open new doors and allow players and corporations alike to have a unique style of rig fittings that they can call their own while having an effective ship/fleet.

This would have extreme implications for game balance; rig calibration costs would have to be completely reviewed. It would also largely obselete T2 rigs; why fit 2 T2 trimarks when you can fit 3 T1s for the same calibration and a small fraction of the cost.

Incidentally, your proposal would see ships being able to fit 8 T1 trimark rigs (3.06x base armor). I really don't think we want to go down that road. How anyone could think that this wouldn't have game balance implications escapes me.

this would be game breaking all the rebalancing shot to pieces with a nuke cannon at point blanc range

Perhaps if I were to fit eight Trimarks to a Catalyst it might finally have some tank.

Still, while this could yield interesting results it would indeed require a thorough rebalancing effort where rigs are concerned and the potential results do not particularly justify the massive effort that would be required.

As stated, it would break balance, and why fix the rig system if it isn't broken at all?
