Mining and refining viable together?

Hey fellow pilots,

Currently in EVE I'm mining and i am enjoying myself, been ale to multitask on different games while i do so. So for this character that is what I'm going to focus on.

I'm just wondering whether it would be viable to also incorporate refining and things of that nature. Would it be worth doing it and training all the skills for it as well as the mining skills? Would it increase my ISK income?

Thanks guys. Also if you have any advice about mining and what skills and ships to train for then feel free to tell me.

The short answer: Yes.

For an example, I pulled median prices off of Eve Central (eve-central.com) for Scordite. A refinable batch of 333 units would sell at 8271.72 ISK if you sold just the ore. The minerals after processing (with max skills and corp standing) would sell for 9802.02.

Wouldn't that mean it's not worth it since he could just be mining on the other account and pull in twice as much?

Your miner should also be your refiner ;)

In fact for things like tech 2 mining crystals, you need refining skills..

No. Refining takes no time.

Bring in ore to station and every now and then right click and press Stack All. Select ore and then right click and select Refine.

Press OK and it's done.

In about 10 seconds your stockpile is worth a lot more.

tech II mining crystals take ore specialization 4 anyway, so yes.

But you need to take the time to get your NPC station faction up so you don't pay npc refining taxes.

In terms of getting value out of your time mining, there's a steady progression, from improving actual mining skills, to refining your own stuff, to building with your own minerals. With each step your isk/h increases. It only takes a few seconds to actually do the refine. Training up the skills to level 4 doesn't take all that long either (ABCM ores take longest of course).

You ALWAYS want to refine your ore before you sell it. If you don't have the skills yet get a corp mate to do it for you. If your doing it solo, make the skills a priority. You could easily be loosing 20-40% of your value selling ore.

Check out the link I posted above. You'll find ore/ISK per hour calculators that break down the best pricing. Personally, if I'm mining I just take every last rock.

I take it you are in Highsec. When in doubt, mine scordite.

Or Pyro :)

You need 6.67 Standing with the Corp that runs the station you are refining in to get max and I believe that you only need the processing skill to lvl2 to get max refine although lvl3 or 4 is required for T2 crystals.

Don't forget that refined minerals take up a lot less space for the most part which means its easier to haul for sale and you don't need to get rooted with low buy orders in whichever station you are in.

Like others have said refining will net you more isk only if certain criteria is met. Get your waste from refining done to 0 and 0% tax from the corp station that you are using (unless you are using a POS then you really need to focus on refinery skills). Shortest and easiest way would be to stock pile a certain type of ore and just sell it off that is if you don't want to mission grind standings.

I don't always bring out my Absolution.

But when I do it makes the Blue's rage, lol.

refining takes a couple seconds before moving it to market to sell. It can actually save you time if you are hauling bulk ore with a freighter to market, refined minerals take up much less space. You should never have a dedicated refining character, aside from the fact that efficient mining uses T2 crystals which require the same skills as refining. The only hard part is getting standings up for the corp that owns the station you refine at.
