How much salvaging skill do you *need*?

Like to salvage the highest possible ships. Do you need salvaging level 5?

I had salvaging level 2 and had trouble with some domi rat wrecks.

At what level can you salvage everything?

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.

When you get a "commander" or "elite" wreck (such as a "Dread Gurista" or "Dark Blood"), do you get an error message? I remember getting one when Huttan was new that said I needed at least salvaging level 3 for a certain wreck .
Quote:
Commander rats (often incorrectly referred to as faction rats) are actual Tech 2 ships that have an excellent chance of dropping faction modules when destroyed. Their wrecks can only be salvaged by players with Salvaging skill level 3 or above, and usually yield Tech 2 salvage used to build Tech 2 rigs.

This entry in the wiki may be obsolete as there are a lot of obsolete entries such as Social skills, this page includes skills removed from the game years ago. Based on what it says, the advice is to get the skill to at least 3. I've found some wrecks won't give up their loot even with salvaging skill of 3 and salvaging rigs. This could be a cruel streak from the random number generator.

Salvage drones have a low chance of success, and it is much faster - with elite wrecks - to dock up and get a ship with a real salvager fitted.

I did encounter an Angel Domination wreck which should be commander rank. Level 2 salvaging didn't work on it so someone else had to salvage it.

You need Salvaging 5 (base chance 25%) for wormhole sleeper battleship wrecks, which have a base modifier of -20%. Salvaging rigs of course can be used to compensate.

I have it in my head that elite faction battleship NPC wrecks require salvaging 4 but can't find the reference.

In practice, salvaging 4 is all you'll really ever need unless you're in a wormhole. If you have a triple rigged salvage ship available then salvaging 3 is more than sufficient.

Thanks. That's all I needed to know.

I also think that you need level 5 and salvager 2 modules for Tech2 wrecks.

Start the day off slow and taper off from there.

One thing to be aware of is you get a big boost by going from 4 to 5:

Level 4 with T1 Salvager, base chance = 4 * 5 = 20%
Level 5 with T2 Salvager, base change = 5 * 7 = 35%

Even in a wormhole, salvaging 4, even 3, is fine. Dont forget you have rigs and an implant to assist in salvaging chance.

To OP, I have a perfect salvage alt in a noctis with 85% to salvage per cycle with 96km tractor beams. It does make a huge difference in time to salvage compared to a lesser skilled person. And your time is only worth what you price it.

Well yes but that's 12 days of training too

Well time is tricky. When salvaging it's not like you have a million wrecks and spend 100% of the time salvaging. In my case I probably spend 3/4 of the time doing other things before a salvage opportunity appears. Even when it's time to salvage most of the time involves getting the noctis into warp speed, slowboating towards a wreck that's 120km away.

A very small amount of the time involves the actual salvagers spinning.

65% access difficulty bonus on my noctis with salvaging 5, t2 salvagers, and 3 salvage rig thingies! most standard rat wrecks don't last more than a cycle. my noctics is on an alt, and I finish salvaging most missions before I can get back to station and turn the mission in.

that said I'd be perfectly happy with salvaging 4 if I had more useful skills to train. but once you can fly everything you fly near perfectly it is a nice addition. it was especially useful on a mararuder with 2 tractors and 1 salvager. but now it seems I kill stuff so quickly I can't be bothered to loot/salvage as I go. and/or I fly pirate BS too.

What about with those salvage drones?
can they be skilled enough to slavage the occasional elite spawn in high sec (as in worlds collide, blockade, or belt spawns)?
My current noctis set up is to fit 8 tractors, signal amps, release drones, and vacuum in all the wrecks - do something else for a while, come back and scoop the cans.

time spent salvaging while AFK doesn't really count IMO

Salvaging drone strength is minimal. Only the most basic of wrecks can be salvaged by them, as they have (I think) 3% chance, up to 13% at level 5 skills.
