A very simple way to improve the undock graphic

Ive really liked the changes in Odyssey to undocking, jumping and pod death. It really helps with the immersion.

One idea I had to improve the undock procedure a little more is to simply have your ship slowly float upwards. It would be very easy to model, the camera angles would not even have to change. Just let the ship model float up slowly to give the impression of the ship leaving dock. The rest of the sequence could remain the way it is.

I think this would be a very simple change to implement and would really help give an impression of actually leaving the dock. Just like the new jump dynamic gives the impression of travelling from one system to the next this gives the impression of traveling to the undocking area, even if it only suggests it.

What do you think?

Yeah, I was actually surprised they didn't make it this way (I was thinking about moving forward, irrelevant detail). Lights on the launchpad are blinking, why the ship is still in place...? ;)

CCP has said that this is just the first iteration on improving the undock experience. Their ultimate goal is to add to it and change it further until in the end we're seeing seamless docking/undocking with no loading bars or black screens at all. I would imagine this requires your ship actually moving into space somehow.

I know and certainly one can imagine far more complex and intriguing ways of undocking but I suggested this as something in between. It doesnt require all the work of modeling everything between the hangar and space (although that is a good goal to have). Until we have that ultimate undock experience I thought this would be a good way to simulate leaving the hangar.

Since eventually our ships do have to leave the hangar and move into space in order for it to be properly seamless, you may get what you want at some point. Adding some ship movement seems like an inevitable stepping stone.
