Railguns or Tech 2 Ships?

Hi,

I am Caldari. Currently on a Perception/Willpower remap and have trained Caldari Battleship 5, Caldari Cruiser 5, mostly maxed Tengu skills, Advanced Weapon Upgrades 5, and got the Missile Control Elite certificate. So I am happy so far Smile

So, having just finished wrapping up my Missile skills and got that shiny new certificate (!), I find out in October that Hybrids are finally going to get rebalanced, which annoys me a bit, but overall I am very pleased with this by CCP. However I deliberately chose to specialise in Missiles because I knew that Railguns = Failguns, which are only useful in very particular situations.

Skillplan is currently:

Energy Grid Upgrades 5
Marauders 1-5
Battlecruisers 5
Warfare Link Spec 1-4
Command Ships 1-4 (takes me to end of January)
Small Hybrid Turret 5
Small Railgun Spec 1-4
Sharpshooter 4
Medium Hybrid Turret 5
Medium Railgun Spec 1-4
Sharpshooter 5
Large Hybrid Turret 5
Large Railgun Spec 1-4
Command Ships 5
Heavy Assault Ships 5
Caldari Freighter 4

I have until end of March next year before I remap to Intelligence/Memory. I can either get some horrifically cool combat ship skills, or almost double the number of ships I can fly effectively by training Railguns. But having all those maxed Tech 2 combat ship skills on what will be a 2-yearold character will be a pretty impressive achievement.

Please discuss.... some advice would be great, and what do you think on what I have trained for so far?

- Sun

Update: Skillplan is now updated. Got into Marauders for the first time last week... Golems are great! They really are the best allround mission-runners.

You really want to be able to use guns in a not to disantt future so get blasters and railguns sorted before you do the next remap.

I would also recommend training up hybrids before T2 ships.

If missiles are the only weapon system you've bothered training, I'd say go with rails or even hybrids in general. No sense in training another race's ships if you can't use their weapons. :)

Besides, it'll be good for your available ships now. You've got a good opportunity to both round out your ability as a player and expand your options to a degree without gimping yourself; take advantage of it!

Thanks for the advice guys...

Hmmm - I can see your points about Hybrids and Railguns - they will be useful for PvP.

I suppose the question I need to answer myself, is 'Do I really need to remap to Int/Mem in April? Why not leave it 3 months and remap in June?'

This would allow me to max out Tech 2 Combat ships AND get good Railgun skills at the same time. Then I won't have to wait at least a year before my mext Perc/Will remap. The Int/Mem remap next year is about getting good EWAR skills (ECM & Target Painting), getting Core Competency Elite, and getting Black Ops navigation prerequisites, among other things.

I think I will probably delay my remap 3 months to get me both skillsets - Thanks again guys...

Train the following:

Battlecruisers 5
Medium Hybrid Turrets 5
Medium Blaster Specialization 4
Medium Railgun Specialization 4
Gunnery support skills 4 preferably 5

The Drake is overall the best BC and there'll be the new Tier 3 BC coming in the winter expansion, so BC5 is a fantastic skill to get!

As far as getting the HAC, CS AS to 5, I'd only really considering doing it if I had crosstrained to other races to get the full advantage of a number of ships.

great, now just repeat what you just did for amarr ships, gallente ships & minmatar ships.

Also, work on getting t2 guns for all the above.

Its what i did, and i love being able to chose to fly whatever the hell i like, as well as being nerfproof

COME AT ME BRO

I'LL JUST BE DOCKED IN THIS STATION

I would focus on training up gallente ship skills instead of any of that stuff ((but that is just me)).
The battlecruiser to 5 is a good idea though P

You could then fly gurista cross faction ships that will make the most out of your missle skills.
You would have to learn to love drones with those missle too. Not sure if that is a style you care for.

Thanks all, my Training Plan is now this:

Energy Grid Upgrades 5
Marauders 1-5
Battlecruisers 5
Warfare Link Spec 1-4
Command Ships 1-4 (takes me to end of January)
Small Hybrid Turret 5
Small Railgun Spec 1-4
Small Blaster Spec 1-4
Sharpshooter 4
Motion Prediction 4
Medium Hybrid Turret 5
Medium Railgun Spec 1-4
Medium Blaster Spec 1-4
Sharpshooter 5
Large Hybrid Turret 5
Large Railgun Spec 1-4
Command Ships 5
Heavy Assault Ships 5
Caldari Freighter 4

The above takes me to end of May.

You are all right, Battlecruisers 5 is a must-have as I also want to fly Command Ships too Smile
Probably won't bother crosstraining other races, I have other accounts for that. And I'm kind of not interested in Large Tech2 Blasters at this stage... I prefer large Rails.

Still, I reckon the above plan is getting pretty cool now Big smile

I am very very new to EVE still but why do people still want to fly command ships? D: Appart from being cheaper than T3 ships what do they offer over them?

Command Ships can give better command bonuses to fleet than Tech1 Battlecruisers and Tech3 ships.

Vulture can fit 3 warfare link mods, up to 7 if you fit Command Processors in your mid slots.

Nighthawk cangive basic command bonuses but has very good applied DPS and a fantastic tank.

Tengu isn't as good at the overall Command Ship role as Command Ships are.

Well, that's half right. Unfortunately, T3s give better bonuses. But fleet CSs can at least contribute something on the field while providing links.

Field CSs can be mean in the right hands -- for both PvE and PvP. The Sleipnir in particular gives the Loki a run for its money in pure tank/damage.

In addition, one or two of the Command Ships (eg. the Eos) can I believe fit an amazing 7 ganglinks and run them cap stable all at once. They never see action of course, but sat at a POS they're a valuable asset. The most you can fit on a T3 is six links, although the 3 racial warfare links do indeed give a slightly better bonus to fleet.

I would train up Gallente ships while your at it since you already have their weapon systems trained. Gives you a lot more options as to what ships you can fly.

Welcome to Eve. Everyone here is an Evil Sick Sadistic Bastard who is out to get you. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either trying to scam you or use you.

If it were me, I'd skip Hac/AF V and get the guns then.

Go minmatar since you have the shield and missile skills already and most everyone is in agreement that minmatar win.

Look into Gallente as well if you are training up Rails, it'll open a fair few options as you'll already have the primary weapon system sorted. Shields work pretty well on some of the ships (Passive Myrmidon and the Shield Gank Thorax/Brutix come to mind) while Armour skills are a short train compared to shields. Hull 5, Mech 5 and Repair Systems 4. BOOM! your done.

I lied :o
