Yes it's this thread again.

I had a 'main' of sorts that I've played from time to time since 2004. Just a month here and there over the years and he's got 10 million SP or so. A gallente with decent drone skills and Battlecruisers and Cruisers at V. You get the picture. The trouble is I don't like micromanaging drones, I find railguns tedious and unsatisfying and I don't like armour tanking. Don't ask me why. I just don't. I never really learned anything about the game because I never found a corp I clicked with so never did much of anything in a group.

So I decided to 'hours for plex' my 'main' to steal all his ISK and various crap and resubbed with an old Caldari alt I started about 2 years ago. I'm on about 2 mil SP and training the suggested certificates for a Drake. Shield tanking, especially passive, and missiles are much more appealing to me. The trouble is a quick calculation tells me that I'm 5 months away from the SP levels of that other char and that knowledge is tormenting me. Do you think there would be any point in trying to sell it? Should I have just started training for Caldari ships on that character? I'm doing boring L2 missions while I wait for my application to Eve Uni to be dealt with and as always with this game my head is spinning and I feel like just giving up again.

So I'm alone and discouraged in Eve again and I figured I would ask for advice. Sorry for the long post. To me Eve is the coolest and best game I've never played.

The character bazaar is full of character resellers, and has some scammers too. People have figured out it's a business they can make profit from, sometimes huge profit. They will buy your character if they can put in 1-2 months worth of training and make it into a cookie-cutter something. The thing is, they always try to buy it cheaply, even if you already have a cookie-cutter that a regular player may want to buy and use.

So be careful what deal you accept.

EDIT:

I re-start periodically. Been playing on and off since the game was released, but this character is only a few years old. If I have a long absence I like to re-start from scratch. I know it's pointless, but for me the game really isn't at the capital ship level (with 100 mil skillpoints), it's more at the frigate - cruiser - battlecruiser level (6 months - 1 year of training).

However, keep in mind that they may change the Drone interface or make the hybrids a lot better or change all the models on Gallente ships to make them all awesome-looking, so if you're chasing a flavor of the month, don't. Pick what YOU like and stick with it.

chances are, you do not need high SP to have fun. there is a lot to do and see in EVE even without high SP. you should ask yourself what your ultimate goal is. i bet it's not having 100m SP but rather something much less quantifiable like living in nullsec or having fun in group pvp etc.
you will find that most of the common aspirations people have can be achieved with moderately low SP. for example, the caracal is an awesome pvp boat and you do not need more than a few million SP to fly it.

I should buy an Ishtar.

Since when does SP amount is a measurement of what you can do and how much fun you can have.
I might have missed that post by CCP.

Seriously, just do what you find the most fun. If you like to crosstrain the Gallente pilot and then use other ships/weapons, do it. If you like it more to start a your caldari alt as your main...do that.
Or if you really like to start fresh, make a new character.

it's all about wht you LIKE to do (ergo, what does make you have fun playing the game).

I suppose my time in other MMO games has made me focus too much on the idea of character progression as the measure of achievement. Thanks for the input. I'll continue my search for a corp and try to stop worrying about SP.

A small tip on how to find a corp is this great guide:

Yes. Eve has a shallow level system, compared to for instance World of Warcraft. You could say there's a level cap in Eve at 5, and not at 90 - or whatever the current is Over There. It take weeks to reach level 90 in WoW, but you're locked into the class you pick. It takes the same amount of time to reach level 5 in Eve, in the particular role you're skilling for.

Eve has a wide level system, compared to WoW's narrow one. You're not forever locked into the class you picked at character creation. You can mix, match, contrast however you want. You want to be a healing damage dealer sneaky sort? Go for it. If you can do it, why not?

High SP does not equate to how well you fly a particular ship. If you have Amarr Carrier at 5, that gives nothing to Gallente Frigate skills. It just means that in this wide level system, the one with the carrier skill can fly a carrier. The same is true for any kind of ship skill. A Battlecruiser. Or a Battleship. Or a mining barge.
