Any Demand/Use For An Actively Flown Fleet/Field Command Ship?

Every time I hear people speak of fleet boosting ships, they are either talking about mining or about a Command Ship (or T3) sitting in a POS on an Alt (or cloaked) and buffing the fleet without actively taking part in whatever is going on.

If I wanted to skill up for a Command Ship that I intended to actually FLY instead of leaving parked somewhere to provide bonuses from safety - is there demand for such a ship? Or would I be wasting my time?

There will be a need for it one day, but not today.

Field Command ships have no bonuses to boosting (although they can fit warfare links, like the T1 BCs)

They can be used like one of the new Navy BCs - just a tankier BC with more DPS.

For the fits that use 3 links.... not much use.
I recently trained my alt to shield boost, and set up a 3 link vulture with 4 rails, and dual boxed a lvl 4.
I had it just keep my main BS at range, its passive tank was plenty, and it did contribute some DPS (I think about 150 IIRC). I'd have the BS leave one cruiser, and set the 4 rail vulture on that cruiser while I actively piloted the BS killing the other stuff.

It was very "meh". 4 medium guns and a flight of drones on the field... meh...

The CFC brings fleet command ships with its fleets constantly. I don't get where this idea that they're never used comes from.

Since the Command ships were changed to require only BC I have been using ALL of them. They are pretty spectacular for just about any application. Can run missions, incursions, pvp like a boss, etc.

But is there ever any purpose to having them on grid, fitted for a boosting role (ie making use of at least 3 links)?

They are acceptable combat boosters for when you can`t get your boost ship off grid, or when a combat situation is expected.

eg. when jumping into a large fight. You can`t be sure that your booster will be getting into position safely, so in those cases it might be best to just jump in a heavily tanked command ship booster.

Alternatively when going on a large roam and when you don`t want to `tow`a booster along, you can bring a pilot in a command ship who can engage in the fight, even if just for nothing else than as a damage sponge. They tend to do that quite well.
