Ugly workaround for "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

This is an ages old issue that plagues EvE since many years ago.

Intel integrated video card laptop users probably know very well the symptoms:

You do stuff and the video turns black for some seconds, then:

- Some times you read a Windows information stating: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" and EvE resumes.
- Other times EvE hard crashes.
- Other times EvE and other applications (typically the web browser i.e. Firefox) all crash in a blaze of glory.

The last two events will cause all sorts of problems including losing ships and whatsnot and CCP will not reimburse them as it's a client generated issue. This post addresses reducing exactly those two events, totally removing the black screen (without crash afterwards) ATM is impossible.

This ugly defect is triggered when:

- You warp into a new system
- You undock
- *NEW* with Odyssey: nightmarish sequence of constant crashes and black outs during the "tunnel" that appears after you warped into a gate and before you appear out of the next.

I was literally getting nuts, I am also a long time "customer" of CCP's lovely "Socket Closed Error" (but only on some computers of course, so they can't blame my ISP) that of course exclusively happens on EvE.

So, for the fix:

- Ignore ANY Intel advice, they are trash.
- Try upgrading your laptop BIOS. This also won't work in my case, as ASUS love to sell hardware, issue 1-2 patches and then never do any update again.
- Try and apply the solutions suggested in this thread.

If they still fail and / or your laptop has no power saving features for the Intel Graphics Chipset (my case) then go ahead. But first, if the above did not work, restore the "vertex shaders" etc. settings, as they slow down the video card for no result.

I added the above because those might *fix* the problem for some so they don't need the ugly workaround listed next.

So for the ugly workaround:
(IMPORTANT: YOU WILL DO THIS UNDER YOUR SOLE RESPONSIBILITY)

You may try get a Microsoft FixIt mini-patch from here.
Windows 8 users will have to start it in Windows compatibility mode.

Those willing to do it the manual way and write to the registry, may look at this video showing the whole procedure.

Also, try playing in full screen mode (not full windowed screen), in my case it reduced the frequency of issue by 50%.

The result:

It's ugly, because it will NOT make the black screen issue go away. But - at least for me - I stopped continuously crashing to desktop both EvE and all my other open applications.
