Probing bug or "feature"?

I have no idea if this is an appropriate forum so ISD peoples please feel free to move as required.

I was probing down some mission runners on my main for ninja salvaging/looting purposes and I happened upon a rather unusual occurance.

I have a custom filter for BS's, Marauders, T3 Cruisers etc. Big stuff. Stuff that can run L4 missions

I found myself a Marauder and sent a friend into the pocket to clear out the mission runner's loot. He was flying a frigate.

I started probing around for a new target and got a red sphere hit at about 10% strength using the new spread out formation. I changed to the new "pinpoint" formation and got my scan result down to 14%, red brackets @ 4AU radius probes (might have been 8AU). Here's where things get a bit unusual.

The 14% red-bracket result was very very close to the 100% green bracket Marauder I just scanned down - both showed up as unique named signatures. Any time I dropped scan radius below 4AU (8AU?) the result would vanish and just leave the green bracket Marauder. Sure enough - if I switched off my custom filter and turned on "show all" the frigate signiture shows up and remains when probing below 4AU.

I can understand it from the point of view of the probes that "they can't recognise the ship type from a broad probe and so it shows it anyway" but I don't remember this happening before Odessy.

TL;DR - a custom probing filter can pick up "interference" from signatures (ship types) not in said filter.

That's how the filter is designed to work.

If you are filtering based on ship type, you need to scan your signature to above 25% strength before your probes will pick up the specific type - frigate, battleship, cruiser, etc.

That's why you saw your frigate friend as a signature at 14% but not when you scanned him above 25% when you decreased probe range. That was your filter kicking in.

If you were filtering on the basis of is it a ship, structure, or cosmic sig, those kinds of filters would work even before you start scanning. Filtering based on ship type needs a yellow sig result to kick in.

Thankyou. Did not know the limit was 25%, and did not know it could include non-ship signatures. Was it this way before Odessy? I'm guessing so but never realised it because my skills were low enough for it not to matter

That's how filters have worked for the last 4 years. Below 25% strength it doesn't know what it is, so it doesn't filter it. Narrow it down and it'll get removed.
