I Miss Simplicity

As some of you know I grew up on a small backwater colony. I was captain of a fishing vessel there, and yes there are still places in New Eden where humanity still eats actual food instead of the various flavored protein packs most people now-a-days believe to be the height of humane ingestion. I have found over the past few weeks that I miss the simplicity of such a life.

Most if not all of you would agree that in New Eden, politics is power and information is the true currency that keeps the universe intact. I don't like that. I came from much simpler beginnings, waking up before dawn and working until dusk so that myself and others of my Clan could eat and have some ISK stored away for a rainy day.

I just don't understand why in this great big galaxy when meeting someone new you must assume that their are a spy or a sociopath or both, the fact that this is normal bothers me greatly. Where I grew up the only thing needed in order to secure trust was a handshake and a promise, and now it seems like without spies, counter-spies, volumes of contracts and documentation, as well as legal garbage nothing can get started with a modicum of surety that it will be completed.

I was wondering what you of the IGS thought of our "modern" society of mistrust and backstabbing. To be honest I can't tell if I am truly upset or simply have mental issues from imbibing homemade liquor and staring that this sun I've been orbiting for the last few hours. And so I leave it to you IGS to decide.

He said he misses simplicity, not simpletons.

I think someone's been orbiting the sun a bit too closely.

If you love the simple life so much it's still an option - you can always forego all the ISK and go back planetside, and forget the capsuleer life.

You're still here, reading this? I thought so.

Well I imagine that's why he doesn't pine for your company.

"I'm rubber, you're glue..."

Tradition defines and shapes a person, but should be evaluated frequently; far too often does Tradition no longer help, but hobble a person and stunt their growth. Especially a Capsuleer.

In that I'm naturally flexible and useful in a vast variety of situations, whereas you are infused with a vast variety of unhealthy chemicals and people generally have to wash their hands after they touch you?

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that the universe is full of illusionary boundaries.

You don't have to be like everyone else. You don't have to eat what they eat, live how they live, work like they work.

Might not be optimal or fashionable to be yourself, but it beats trying to remember who you're supposed to be.

You're gonna have enemies no matter what you do.

So might as well be yourself and let the chips fall where they will.

There are only two immutable laws :

1. Conflict
2. Evolution

Everything else is a crapshoot.

I missed simplicity but that was just because I wasn't aiming through the sight properly.

Simplicity is in the realm of the lack of power. When you have nothing of worth, or little worth, it's easy to trust others because the probabilities of them betraying you are small. This is what happened with your fishing clan, probably living in a community full of similair clans doing similair things for similair reasons.

But that's forgone. You're in the realm of the mighty and powerful now. We may not be Holders, or have won elections, chiefs of one of the Caldari megacorps or tribal leaders... but we hold the power of life and death among the stars. And, for that power, there is a lot to gain from stealing, betraying, and destroying. We live surrounded by different kinds of people in a community full of different kinds of societies and ideals, working for opposing and different reasons.

In the end, we're not fishers. If you miss simplicity, forego the implants on your spine and return to fishing. Here in the stars, only the powerful, the cunning, the devoted and brave have a place to be. And those virtues lie far from simplicity.

It is not as simple as simply giving up my implants, though I have thought about it, I signed a contract with Ishukone for them. They gave me experimental implants for free and a cheap ship, I test out their implants and deal with the side effects. There are days where I would like nothing more than to return to my old vessel, The Girl, but I came to the stars to collect stories to bring back to the young ones of the Clan. Knowledge of the stars to the Elders. Make no mistake I enjoy the family I have found among the stars, it just bothers me that beings such as we with such power sometimes seem to not have the responsibility needed in order to govern ourselves.

You should give Quafe distribution a shot.

I dunno if it's what you're looking for though. You'll get some really good stories to tell but it's pretty complex work.

Chilled Quafe™, accept no refreshment substitute. For all of you affluent Capsuleer-types, Quafe Elite™ restaraunts can be found at many stations! Only got a few minutes to spare before that fleet-op? Swing by QuafeSnacks™ for the full taste-experience you've come to expect from Quafe, on the go!

Yes, unfortunately, such is the case way too often.

I can appreciate the honesty and direct nature of a simpler life. But can simplicity and the immortal life of a capsuleer not come hand in hand? Consider this. I serve the Caldari State, I do as I am ordered and I execute the State's orders no matter what. I don't trouble myself with the paperwork, or the intrigue, or the political ramifications. If my Militia tells me to shoot something, I shoot it. My life is dedicated to the rush of combat, the blast of missile and laser fire as either me, or my enemy, is left victorious.

As a fisherman, your life came down to the fishing. Your life was dedicated to the rush of the catch, as either you or the fish got what you wanted. If you direct yourself, if you strip away the distractions this galaxy has to offer, simplicity can be yours again.

Give a man a match and you warm him for a day.

Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life!
