A question about character BIOs.

I'm probably going to regret any answer I get here but what the heck. As long as I've been playing I've never seen a BIO of any real value. Most of what I see is regurgitation of someone elses. I've seen numerous BIOs that state damage types. Who cares! I've seen BIOs that are nothing more than cut & paste from chat. Again, who cares!

So, obviously, my question is, what is the real purpose behind the BIOs? I will admit, I don't have one but its because of all the others I see that are as I stated above. Who cares!

Thanks in advance to anyone that gives a response that is of any real value.

well you actually answered your own question...

Value / Who cares?

Obviously those who write it down cares so thats why they put it in there.

Other than that..

Originally i think it was there to provide some space for "role-players" to write down some persona "credentials"

EVE is an RPG. So why not have the ability to give yourself a backstory?

Sure, some (most) people have random quotes or an ASCII picture or something, but that still goes long to show who they are.

See "Industrial Corp Guy #7" who has all kinds of tears or something in his bio? ... hmm, maybe he's not as much of an industry guy as you thought.

See "PvP Dude #18" who has all kinds of industrial sounding things in his bio? ... hmm, maybe he's not much of an PVPer...

See random Gallente pilot with anti-Caldari slurs in his bio? Buy him a drink Cool

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

It's there for the backstory and for you to put a personal touch on your character. I remember seeing quite a few clever and original things in there and had written something for myself too. Then the bios got nerfed and I couldn't be arsed anymore, so I copypasted some useful basic info there, that the game doesn't tell you, but everyone should know. It's a useful thing to have even in it's nerfed state, but if you don't have use for it don't use it.

So people have something to read or links to possibly click while they get scanned down. Pirate

The advantage of a bad memory is that one can enjoy the same good things for the first time several times.

One will rarely err if extreme actions be ascribed to vanity, ordinary actions to habit, and mean actions to fear.

BIOs

'Bio' is an abbreviation of 'biography', and not an acronym for anything (unless you are actually referring to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Bilbao Airport, the Biotechnology Industry Organization or the British Informatics Olympiad, but I doubt that). Please refrain from capitalising abbreviated words simply because they happen to have three letters.

Also, we are pod pilots, not POD pilots; capital ships are caps, not CAPs; and stasis webifiers are webs, not WEBs.

Bio is a polite way of saying you've gotta go drain the lizard. People have bios because it's preferable they drain the lizard in an appropriate receptacle, not in a half refilled Gatorade bottle.

Well, we're both apparently half-right... CCP themselves classify it as an MMORPG...

The "Role" we're playing is capsuleers some 20k years in the future.

I wish for it to be allowed more characters so one actually could put something useful in there (or make even more gibberish haha)

What is Value? One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I place as much importance on my bio as I do on my avatar - which is none. Personally I think the argument you raise regarding a bio could equally apply to an avatar, corporation description, alliance logo, alliance description, Item description, ship description...

...without all that fluff Eve would have the personality of lobotomised Glue sniffer on prozac.

The BIO is a box where you can type in pretty much anything you like that other people can read.

THAT is the point of the bio.

The fact that you dont like what others put in there is completely irrelevant. I think the whole point of your post is for you to voice your displeasure.

OK, duly noted.

Lets end this fail thread.

The original EVE concept was a mix between Elite and Ultima Online.

The combat mechanics themselves are pretty much based on the turn based dice role mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons, just like most other mmorpgs, mechanics which are affected by leveling up your character and having items equipped which boosts your stats. Very much an rpg.

Greetings capsuleer,

There is value in providing some useful information to other capsuleers; especially as this is one of the first informative pieces they'll see about any pilot they encounter. Alas most capsuleers are not articulate enough to put anything beyond pictures of archaic, old-earth weaponry; puerile insults or a textual approximation of their male sexual organs.

It is what you make of it; like everything else in New Eden.
