Hello I picked up the Amarr explorer starter kit via steam. I have the Sarum Magnate and no idea how to start exploring!

You might want to start with the exploration tutorials. You can find them by pressing F12 in game and follow the instructions to the tutorial agents from there.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but that is a rare special edition ship that you probably don't want to lose. (I see them going for over 1 million ISK. )

If I were you, I would buy a cheap Magnate and keep your Sarum in the garage for awhile. (The tutorial might give you a Magnate, so do that first. )

The Sarum Magnate is NOT a special edition ship. 1 million ISK extremely cheap in EVE, so you might as well use it.

To the OP: Have you done the exploration career missions? You can learn a lot from them.

I did see after the very early wave of tutorial missions I was sent to a new system for a new trainer and there are trainers of all vocations there. I am assuming that is the exploration starting point?

The career missions are given to you by 10 agents, covering a few potential careers. Each agent has 10 missions for you to do, totaling 100 missions,so I suggest you do them all.

That's what I get for posting while at work.

Sorry about that, I was thinking there were a few more zeros, and that it was worth a couple Plex. My bad.

Well that is good to know I can get another. I knew that ships blew up and just assumed it was a nice looking toy for now, and I am enjoying flying it around!

So I've done all the Exploration and Career missions from the academy. When using the agent finder the only exploration ones that I can find seem to be for the introduction. Is exploration something you just dive into after learning a bit about it?

Yes, the money is in the loot not the agent rewards. You are the agent...go find stuff.

Indeed the money appears to be in the loot! First adventure on my own I decided to take a few jumps away from where I had set up shop. Scanned down a data site and found something called an Occult Process listed at an estimated worth of 6.7million. Exciting!

Stick in highsec for a while until you learn how things work. When you feel confident enough, see how you do in lowsec, and once your an experienced explorer, you might want to try exploration in null/WH space!

Thanks for all the replies and answers guys. I have another question. I am really enjoying exploration and have come across astrometrics and the related skills. If I specialize in exploration will it lead to any bigger ships and or useful roles I could fill with a corp?

Not really. Exploration is pretty self contained, however you will find challenging combat sites that will require you and/or your friends to have more advanced ships, you will find gas sites that require extra training and specialized equipment and you can go wormhole diving, which is an experience (and has its own sub-forum below) all to itself. These are in addition to the data and relic sites you are probably exploiting.

The skills you can develop most directly lead to covert ops and recon in terms of fleets or corps, which isn't a terribly well defined role. Most any ship can be outfitted to explore depending on your particular likes and dislikes.

As a brand new player, you are reaping the benefits of CCP's effort to make Eve a little more accessible for newer players. Fortunately for you, they picked exploration. Its easy to get into, leads you away from the traditional mining and mission scenarios, and is frankly fun. Plus it encourages you to dive off into other unknown systems and discover what's there. THis includes the good stuff, and the baddies.

Yes and no.

Yes: exploration is useful, even if you hate it and want the people that designed it to die in a fire chances are you're going to be pulling out the old probe launcher at least a few times a year.

No: the problem with "is this useful for a corp" is that essentially every character you'll meet that's older than 3 or 4 months has sufficient exploration skills to find anything short of w-space sites. Get as many of the skills as you NEED to do what you want with it, then train up your combat skills if you're mostly sticking with exploring.

That said, the personal skills (as opposed to mechanical "skills" bought with sp/training) that you'll pick up actually doing exploration will serve you very, very well in many other parts of the game:

1. The pace is very slow and the rewards are sporadic, making it a profession where nothing happens, then nothing happens, then more nothing, then ZOMGSHIPSEVERYWHEREONFIRENOOAUUUGH, then nothing, then more nothing. This is kind of a summary of Eve's pacing in general, too.

2. Most of exploration isn't in scanning or fitting ships, it's performing three tasks at once (setting map points, scanning, and doing site puzzles or combat) while also looking over your shoulder constantly. This constant paranoia is a great habit for PvP or even corp warfare, plus the specific tools you learn to use (d-scanner, local list, the tag system) are invaluable for anyone.

3. Since exploration sites are so random, among other things you'll learn to fly several sizes and types of ships, because some days you WILL be so hard-up for sites that you'll run low-difficulty combat sites where the ship class is restricted. Since you'll be moving around a lot, chances are you'll get decent with shields, armor defense, and at least two major weapon systems to deal with player and npc threats.

Yes and no. Not if you just stop at exploration. But the principle of Combat Scanner Probes is the same as that of Core Scanner Probes. Once you are comfortable probing down sites, you might try to pinpoint players (that may or may not be moving about in safe spots). From personal experience I can tell you few things are as satisfying as being the catalyst for a fight that otherwise would not happen.

This sounds amazing, I want to do that.

So I'm going to put a bit more into exploration to enjoy my roaming around low-sec trying to stay away from these people with bounties haha while afterwards I want to make myself competent in all the relevant skills and work my way from the Punisher into a Maller. The Maller sounds VERY me and fits my name after reading about it.

Now I have a plan at least! Become a great explorer, then be able to scan down other players, while working my way into that bruiser that seems to be the Maller after my reading.
