Starting the Blood-Stained Stars epic arc...

Checked out a couple guides to see what I was in for... for "The Commander" mission I'm going to have to ally with another race and apparently my best bet is to choose one that is the least like mine, which should give me an edge in the fight. Since I'm Minmatar, which race should I choose for the best result?

Also, is it recommended that I try and fleet up with some other players for this or is it relatively solo-able?

As far as I know, the commander mission is just to choose a faction for some extra standing increase. Dagan (the hard guy you need to kill) omnitanks anyway. It doesnt matter which faction you chose. You just need to do a lot of damage to break its tank. If it doesnt work alone, you need to bring in a friend.

I'd say stop planning for this trip and start doing it. It's not all that scary :)

I don't know. I happen to do it today on an alt on a trial account. A Vexor with 5 Hammerhead I's chewed him up in less than 30 seconds.

Watch out for the "Chasing Shadows" mission later on. your opponent is flying a battle cruiser equipped with some pretty nasty energy weps. I got my Caracal destroyer fried right and proper by that dude. Even with 100+ DPS on my side, I could never wear him down fast enough to prevail. He regens armor like a sononfagun.

The moral of the story:

1. Bring big enough guns, and
2. Bring a friend.

Well, as she's already on the Commander, she passed Chasing Shadows.
And the trickiest part of Chasing Shadows is his heavy neut - as your capacitor will be quickly drained to zero, this mission is easy to do solo if you use cap-free weapons (missiles, projectile weapons or drones), but much, much harder with hybrid weapons or lasers.

While Dragan is hard for everyone.

As for the faction, if you have no clue, I suggest taking the one you have the worst standing with, as it is a good way to keep balanced standings between all factions.

Actually haven't gotten to The Commander yet, was just looking ahead to see what was in store for this arc. Lots of good info and advice from you guys though, keep it coming!

Well, if you haven't started it yet, be especially careful with "Burning Down the Hive".
That is the most dangerous mission of the arc, as you will encounter a swarm of drones that will warp scramble and web you if they get too close. It's not that difficult if you know what to expect, but a new player might be careless (especially as the missions before it are easy) and find himself swarmed by too many drones and unable to warp out. Many, many new players lose their ship there. It is pretty much the first mission where you have to pay attention as to how to fly.

Chasing Shadows and Dragan are difficult because of the dps requirement, but you usually aren't in danger of losing your ship there, as you can run away.

I've finished the five career trainers and am now up to Mission 10 in the Blood-Stained Stars arc, so I still have a way to go. Will definitely be sure to look before I leap.

The best thing you can probably do to make these easier is to have a good fit.

You should be flying a destroyer minimum.

Just got through Mission 20 (Every Drone Inside) with a pretty solid Rifter build and came away with nary a scratch. Not sure it'll be enough to get me through the craziness down the line, but I was certainly surprised. And pleased.

Cool

UPDATE: Since my embarrassing pod death incident and the loss of my beloved Rifter, I've outfitted my Thrasher for the rest of this arc, or until it gets blown out from under me. Ah, adventure! *lol*

I just completed Burning Down The Hive in a modestly fitted Thrasher, though it took me a couple run throughs until I realized that I could just navigate around the web drones in the second room, hit the acceleration gate and jump into room three, clean up the mess, and turn the mission in. Sadly, I didn't get the bonus ISK for this one, but the sense of accomplishment is better anyway. Just thought I'd post the "dodge the drones" strategy for anyone else who has trouble with this notorious mission. You don't have to engage the drones in the first two rooms, only the ones in the third. Easy peasy!

Okay, now I'm stuck. Currently trying to complete the Recovery mission, but I keep getting smashed without dishing out enough damage to even have a chance. Using my Thrasher with Mjolnir missiles and 200mm cannons but no luck. Any ship build / skill / strategy advice on how best to succeed with this one?

Ugh

Make sure to have a damage control and at least a medium shield extender and a afterburner on there :D

I've used variations of that combo, but I'm still getting pwned in a bad way... fortunately I've been able to warp to safety at the last second, but it's getting old fast. Not dealing enough missile damage from 18km out because they're still cutting me up with their lasers, and if I try and go in fast and hard and unload my cannons, I still get smoked. Here's what I'm up against:

First wave

2 x Cruiser Corpum Arch Engraver
2 x Frigate Corpior Converter

Second wave

1 x Frigate Corpii Collector

As a relatively new player I finished this arc a week ago and it's soloable as long as you plan ahead for some of the later missions. Finding out which damage is more common, or which tactics to use (like kiting at long range) or weapons (proj turrets are really good in the dagon mission since they don't drain capacitor, etc) as well as some basic ship skill training will be enough. Remember you can always pre-set a saving point before you enter the rooms and just warp away the moment you start taking too much damage... only 1 of the missions has warp disruption ships.I used minmatar frigates (rifter mostly) for the whole arc. If you're having troubles with damage remember you can change ammo to get the right balance of damage and range with those turrets.

This video tutorial was most helpful for me to solo (actually I think I did the last part with the help of a clannie but that's only because I wanted to get it over with faster...): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfFMKADWG5o&list=PL2C4F8D9B337870FC

What the . . . ? Where did my post go?

Ok, I'll ask again: what ammo are you using?

Rest easy, friends... the mission was a late night success! Finally found a Thrasher fit that worked and all is well in the universe. Went with EMP ammo and a speed / shield combo and was able to deliver the killing blow. Felt good too.
