Latvia becomes the 18th country to join the Euro. I'm completely baffled as to why anyone would want to join the Euro right now. Are there any Latvians in the house capable of explaining this mystery? Right now I'm thinking someone high up has a large currency trade waiting to mature.

Joining at the bottom of the market, locks in the value of the previous currency at the best rate.

And if you're legally bound to join the Euro, might as well do it at the best point right?

Considering the Latvian currency was essentially tied to the Euro for the past 8 years with a 1% float, it had already been for all practical purposes adopted in 2005. Officially beginning to use the euro is really more of a cosmetic change than an actual one.
