Probes that run out of time do not in fact return to your ship. I lost 8 sisters core scanner probes today that didn't return to my ship. I also wasn't able to reconnect to them. They simply disappeared.

Same thing happened to me. I have submitted a bug report and a forums post to that effect. They are supposed to return according to the patch notes.
