Relic Sites?

Hey all, newb player here, wanting to check out the new exploration stuff. I have a frig fit with a Data Analyzer I and a Relic Analyzer I.

When I found a Data Site (or whatever they're called), I did the hacking minigame and got the loot. No problem.

For the Relic Sites, I've been to two of them and have no idea what to do. There's debris and stuff everywhere, but when I try and use my Relic Analyzer on anything, it never works.

What stupid dumb obvious thing am I missing here?

Once you succesfully hack the can, or whatever you want to call it, all the loot then gets spewed out in small cans. you then have to try to double click on them, to approach them, which will gather the one you click, and move onto the next. with doing it solo, i usually get half before they dissapear

Yeah I figured that out eventually, but I can't figure out what I need to target in Relic Sites to even begin the process... or am I just finding relic sites that've been picked through already or something?

You need to bring both a salvager and a analyzer for relic sites.

I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.

You need just one click. Not a double click. Double clicking will make your ship move and can actually make it harder to try and catch them. If you position your ship well before you engage in the hacking mini-game, this can be very beneficial for catching the containers once they spew out into space.

At least, this has been my experience.

You need to bring both a salvager and a analyzer for relic sites.

That is NOT CORRECT anymore. The act of salvaging has been removed from relic (archaeology) sites.

You can only hack the items that are marked with an container icon on your overview (little square, standing on a corner). Everything else is just visual fluff.

Indeed, it's pretty much exactly the same as the data sites, except it looks like derelict ships rather than data arrays.

Make sure you change your overview settings so you can see the new hacking cans on it. They are under a different name now.

I had to do this before I could find what I should be targeting.

Another possibility for OP's experience is something that happened to me yesterday -- scanned down a data site, flew to it, and there were just some barren asteroids and a couple of multi-purpose pads in space. It was either a glitch, or someone actually took the time to blow up all the structures after harvesting the site?

I searched for this earlier after spending a couple of hours scanning down lots of empty sites. I'm sure something must be wrong.

Having read these replies and checked my Overview settings, I had the box for "Scatter container" un-checked.

I checked it and hey presto, I can see all the relic site boxes. o\

Overview Settings->Filters tab->Types tab->Entity group->Scatter Container
