What skills should you have on an alt?

I'm considering buying a PLEX with the new changes to skill up an alt to haul. But that won't take long. What else might be good on an alt, thats trainable in a month?

(I tried posting in general but just got troll responses)

Trading skills (sell what you haul with less taxes and bigger range), contracting skill (transfer between main and alt), Hull Upgrades (cargo expanders), enough Engineering to be able to install shield defenses and hardeners, definitely Navigation skills cause your hauler is slow enough as it is, some Industry (refining? planetary stuff?).

http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Creating_an_Alt_Hauler

E-Uni guide to creating an alt hauler. It explains a bunch of details on the topic in a fairly easy to read format.

Note that with the new changes coming up, that guide will be redone but it should give you a good idea of what was and the why behind the training, which should help you to build such plans on your own. (it's not that long a guide and a fast/easy read).

A.) If you don't know what you should use an alt for. You don't need an alt.

B.) X posting is not allowed. Either post here OR in GD, not both

If you are new to the game then the odds of you needing an alt are very slim. Older players have alts for things like trade, hauling, cyno'ing, scouting, exploring and logistics.

I am working on an alt currently, he is focussing on freighter/jump freighter + trade skills. I am going to make (or possibly purchase) another alt soon to light cynos for my jump freighter.

As others have suggested, I would hold off on that until you know what you want an alt for, and then train the alt to suit your purposes, instead of starting with just having an alt, and then trying to figure out what it should do.

An alt can be for combat support, fleet boosting, industry, trade, or a myriad of other roles, but like the others have said, figure out the alt's primary purpose before you spring for the second account. I, for one, didn't start an alt until my main was going down a path which closed certain doors to it.

For a new alt, I would seriously consider creating a new account instead. You can train a lot of the supporing skills you will want on that hauling alt (navigation, engineering, shield, ship command) to make them a very effective hauler. Spend the first 3 weeks training all the support skills since you can't train industrials on a trial account, then spend a month training up your racial indy skill of your choice. Cost per day is about the same but you end up with a much more useful alt. You also can use your alt to help your main make more isk in the meantime. You could also use the Buddy program to get free gifts but doing this would technically violate the Buddy program rules so I'm not advocating it.

Compare:
3 week trial - free
1 month sub - $15
$20 Transfer fee to your main account

51 days of training for $35

Dual Training
$20 Plex
1 month dual training

30 days training for $20

My shadow's job is to follow me around and make my life easier. He often trains skills I can't be bothered to.

Here is a summary:

* Starbase Defense (POS gunner)
* Trade
* PI
* Research and Manufacturing
* Ore, ice, and gas harvesting: Exhumers and Venture
* Salvaging: Noctis
* Exploration: Hacking + Archeology
* Cyno (I plan to get this to 5 for covert)
* Black Ops: Widow + Sin (jump drive skills, still working on other support skills)
* Industrials: All races
* Transports: Crane + Bustard
* Freighter: Charon (just need to inject the other races)
* Jump Freighter: Rhea (freighter + jump drive skills)
* Fleet booster: Orca, Rorqual (Orca + jump drive skills), Command Ships
* Mission DPS Support: Dominix + Rattlesnake + Gila (combat drones are his only weapon-system)
* Logistics: Basilisk + Oneiros (result of being Gila pilot, but Guardian and Scimitar are also planned)
* Carrier: Chimera, Thanatos (follows with Rattlesnake / Rorqual + drones + Logistics)

Of course you cannot train all those in a month.

True on Monday, no longer on Tuesday, sadly.

The good news is that you can, I think, fly an Iteron V with Gallente Industrial I, and watch it improve as you train up the skill.

The bad news is that the prerequisites for the Obelisk have changed to Gallente Industrial III and Advanced Spaceship Command V.

Train them in Cyno's as well. Cyno's are always useful.

The good news with that is:

Flying a /different/ freighter, after you've trained one, takes only a few hours, rather than the days it did before.

In case it's not obvious to newbies:
The reason people go for the Iteron Mark V, is because of the number of low slots. these allow you to stack a lot of cargo expanders. The base cargo is larger than 1-3, but the same as 4.

And please, for the love of everything you hold holy, don't stick everything you own in an Industrial. Because you'll probably have it blown up from under you.

Woo! CSM XI!
