Once you are pointed or scrammed, and thereby prevented from warping away, you are pretty well dead however well you’ve tanked your barge.

All the same I think the retriever is like the bottom of the list, a procurer is capable of much better tanking. The exhumers are better again with the skiff topping the list. I only say this based on my ganking experience – retrievers are pretty easy with solo catalyst, procurers often just laugh while CONCORD kills me, exhumers vary greatly with their fit, and skiffs barely register my hits … even when they’re fail fit.

From what you have described I do not see your problem as being one of tank, more it’s one of allowing yourself to get caught while mining. Some people may suggest warp core stabilisers, but IMO the solution here is a little more game experience and a little more care. I also don’t know whether lowsec mining is sufficiently better value than hisec to warrant the extra risk. Others may have opinions on that.

Good luck out there.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

Procurer has the best tank and I think that is the best for low sec. I wouldn't mine low sec though.

You can get the same minerals in high sec and it is safer.

Max yield retriever is great for low sec if you are part of a group living in that low sec area others can be great too depending on the area and how secure the pocket is.

As a solo guy you are crazy to mine in low sec unless you are still in a venture waiting to get barges. (( use that plus 2 warp strength ))

From the sounds of it I'd just fit a max yield retriever and stay in very high sec until you have a good amount of cash and/or get picked up by a good mining corp.

If you're going to mine in low-sec, use a Venture and find a quiet, preferably dead end system. (Such as Notoras.) When somebody enters local, spam dscan and be ready to warp until they leave. The Venture's +2 warp strength will usually let you get away before a frig can pop you should one come in and catch you off guard and it's fast and nimble enough to evade bigger ships should they do the same.

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

If you wish to mine in low sec you need to pick the system carefully.

I recommend Hykanima an hour or two before downtime. It's the best spot I have found.
