This huge motherfucking moth just entered my office, crashing through the window.. flying everywhere.. banging its huge wings against my head trying to scare the bejezus out of me and just flying as fast and as erratically as it possible can..

I ran out of the room in terror, and with cold sweat running down my spine. Shut the door close on my way out, only to hear a loud bang and then a loud thump as the ceiling fan cut the abobination in half, and it crashed down into a cardboard box.

Only now i'm trying to figure out why the hell was i so scared.. Can these things even hurt people?

Man, you should be a writer.

Huge, loud bangs, loud thumps, crashing..... It's only a moth and even I'm scared for ya! What?

OP: You should just relax, he only wanted to go moth to mouth (m2m). Probably was horny.

In other news, you should ABSOLTELY lick the magical fairy dust from a moth. It''s wonderful.

The threat is very very real. There's a theory called the "moth constant" which states that the physical threat a moth poses is exponentially proportional to a moth's size. It reduces to zero, but after the size of say a gypsy moth the threat becomes very pronounced. If the moth in your office was say .25% larger than a gypsy moth you should be very careful... they can take off your frakin' head. Tread carefully, and don't take chances. The large moth's only natural enemy is the ol' spray can lighter blowtorch combo. Think about it. If you burn down your office it will be a small price to pay... that is.. if you value human life. Otherwise.... prepare for inter-office xenocide. The giant moth takes no prisoners.

But this one is dead already. My ceiling fan valiantly defended me while i was locked down somewhere else...

The moth is divided in two right now.. which is why i don't take a picture to prove how big it really was. Ain't no way in hell i'll pick up the pieces and put them near each other for a comparasion.

I hear moths can give real nasty rashes..

That is a smart move. A moth is never really dead. Make an intern do it. If he gets killed... I still think you should burn the room. In fact... you should probably just burn down the whole building right now. Better safe than sorry. Sure... the insurance company may complain... you may even get charged with arson or something... but if I know law you will win your case on the basis of self defense. There's precedent... google it.

Big smile

Its not a building, its my own house.

Were it a building i'd just "**** this ****" this ****. For some reason, though, most people find it hard to believe that i have a home office.. The same people find it even harder to believe that i play EVE from that office..

I can't very well burn down my own house. I have no insurance.

Moths are fuckin TERRIFYING, I salute you for a very reasonable and manly response to its invasion.

Similar thing happened to me only I didnt have a valiant ceiling fan, I just ran out of the room and then from a safe distance began to toss books at the beast. Eventually one struck it down and my foot finished it off for good...one day I'll tell my kids about it

I am not sure this is the one I was looking for; as I heard about a Japanese wasp that can dissolve about a golf ball amount of flesh with a sting.

Quote:
The enzyme in the venom is so strong that it can dissolve human tissue. On some occasions, the sting may be compared to the effects of a spider bite.

I don't think Wasps are that terrifying. They are scary, but do not command the sheer terror that a massive moth does when it comes crashing through the window like crazed barbarians, flying everywhere randomly and hitting everything with great strenght.

I swear to got it even tried to penetrate me in the mouth.

You did read these two parts right?

Quote:
The venom contains at least eight distinct chemicals, some of which damage tissue, some of which cause pain, and at least one which has an odor that attracts more hornets to the victim.
....
Like all the wasp family and unlike bees, V. mandarinia has a barbless stinger, allowing it to sting repeatedly

Personally, I think we need many more things that will kill people off. I place my hope in mad scientists.

Here in Italy we have giant three and four-inch hornets. When you kill them, you have to step on them about five or six times to keep them from getting up.

I'll take a moth any day.

Yeah i read that part.. Thing with hornet is that their flight "path" is somewhat predictable. What terrifies me in moths isn't what they can or can't do, its the complete randomness and speed of their flight path. You don't know if its going to ram itself in your ear, eye, mouth or try to fly inside your shirt.

But i know very well, like i said, the pain brought by the sting of the wasp. One in particular, very abundant here where i live is the Tarantula Hawk

If the name itself isn't enough to convince people of how scary that thing is, i'll just snip:

Quote:
[...] the sting, particularly of Pepsis formosa, is among the most painful of any insect, though the intense pain only lasts for about 3 minutes. Commenting on his own experience, one researcher described the pain as "…immediate, excruciating pain that simply shuts down one's ability to do anything, except, perhaps, scream. Mental discipline simply does not work in these situations.[,,,] The wasp's sting is rated near the top of the Schmidt Sting Pain Index [,,,] and is described by Schmidt as "blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric"

However i should note that this text is misleading. The "3 minutes" part only relates to the initial part of the pain. For those first three minutes i paced around in extreme pain and sincerely contemplated running to the roof and jumping off of it. It makes you irrational, obvioulsy. However after those first minutes that pain goes away and gives place to a more beareable, albeit still highly unconfortable pain for two days straight. Not to mention severe swelling of the stung area.

Come to think of.. that experience might be the reason why i'm so terribly afraid of anything that flies and apparently "toys" with me.

EDIT: Btw i just saw in the article that the "Cazadores" in Fallout New Vegas are based on the tarantula hawk. How fitting...

Pffft. These bad boys you want to run screaming from:

Quote:
This massive hornet can achieve lengths of 3 inches full grown and has been known, in numbers of only 20 or 30, to decimate an entire hive of honeybees. The sting can be lethal not just by allergic reactions but also due to its many toxins. Here are four interesting things about its sting:
a: Its sting has a higher concentration of the pain-causing chemical called Acetylcholine than any other stinging insect.
b: An enzyme in its venom can dissolve human tissue.
c: Containing at least eight distinctly different chemicals, the venom itself produces one such that actually attracts others of its kind to the victim.
d: Like all other hornets, it can sting repeatedly.
