Best Cruisers or Battlecruisers to smash level 3's?

Folks I'll be honest. I am a newb and probably months away from actually pulling off my plans here, but after some google searching I have come up with incomplete information so please indulge me a moment.

I found the faction standing repair plan by DeMichal Crimson, and if he is still around in the game I hope to send him some isk one day because it is FANTASTIC! Which detailed a lot of ways to boost your standing with factions and corporations. My plan is to hike up the standings of one character on my account so that he can act as a buyer for my pvp character who may or may not be able to enter high standing space in the future. The ability to use PLEX for training two characters on my one account will help me work this out without loosing much training time on my pvp character too, thanks CCP!

So I gathered that the most I could do at a lowish siillpoints would be to do the sisters of eve mission line which I can do in a destroyer or cruiser, but the higher end data center and epic missions will probably be out of my league. So with those out of my grasp I looked for the next best thing for standing and the unanimous result was that level 3 missions were the ticket.

Anyhow, to get on to the point of the post, I am putting together a skill plan for the high-standing character and need to go ahead and pick a ship or ships to aim for. I assume that I will be using Jita for my market base so that means I will be running level 3 missions for the caldari navy.

From the old-ish posts I read the drake was a staple ship for the job, but I am aware there are a lot of ship balance changes recently and incoming which might have shaken things up.

Thanks for your help!

Now, I want everybody to find the nearest minmatar and lay hands on him. But first, make sure your hand is balled up in a fist so you can beat the black outta his soul. God smiles when you hate blackness so you beat that matar in the name of the Almighty!

Drake is still pretty decent for L3s, though it now suffers quite a bit against enemies that aren't weak to kinetic damage (read: Sansha, Blood Raiders, and Rogue Drones). If your skills are all in missiles, it's still the "right" choice.

If you have gunnery skills instead, I'd tend to recommend a Hurricane instead. Same idea -- passive tank it and keep range -- but with guns you'll be managing transversal as well. But you'll also be blatting things on approach with great alacrity. And you'll be able to sort of select your damage type.

I'd go for something like this :
Quote:
[Ishtar, Ishtar fit]

Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Damage Control II

10MN Afterburner II
Sensor Booster II, Targeting Range Script
Omnidirectional Tracking Link II
Thermic Dissipation Field II
Gistii B-Type Small Shield Booster

Drone Link Augmentor II
125mm 'Scout' Accelerator Cannon

Medium Core Defense Operational Solidifier I
Medium Core Defense Operational Solidifier I

Garde II x5
Warden II x5
Vespa II x5
Hornet II x5

Around 300m ISK.
Able to choose any damage type.
Built-in racial strong T2 Kinetic defense (87%)
84% Thermal resist (Second dmg type dealt by Guristas)

600 DPS Warden II
800 DPS Garde II

Tank : 240 dps which imo is way more than enough to tank L3's

Drone control range = 109km

Permaruns everything.
The Railgun is only here to pull one group at a time (Dunno if this still works though).

With this you should be able to pop most rats before they even realize you're there (and I mean that literally)

Ishtar or Gila with T2 Sentries is the best by far...

Ham tengu. Use Jav with 3x range rigs, more range, more dps, and better tracking than hml fury with 3x rigors.

Gnosis is the best ship. I personally perfer the heavy missile version. Let your drones out to kill small stuff and use missiles in addtion against the larger things. Furthermore, you can choose the tank of your preferences go for shield or armor as you like.

Tengu is naturally much more effective, but also much more expensive and skill intensive (if this is an issue for you).

You'd probably be better off using 2 separate accounts. Using the buddy referral system means your alt will get an extra 21 days and you main will get an extra 30 days. Not only that, but having a separate account means you can use your alt for scouting, scanning and tackling while your main does the heavy work.

For level 3s, Drake is a good choice.

Any BC can do L3.

With low skills you may wish to look at passive shield (only the hardener requires skill at IV, everything else can be fitted with Meta4) capable ships.

Drone boats are a bit more skill intensive due to the requirement of training up sentry drones with the AI patch. Damage application can be very strong, though.

You may wish to avoid medium rail boats, because the weapon system is underpowered.

The best cruiser hands down is the Gila, once you can use T2 sentries. It's a 250M investment though.

Passive shield Myrmidon (yes, the rep bonus is wasted) is a strong contender, less DPS, but even better HP/s if fitted correctly.

Drake and Hurricane are both decent. Don't completely neglect drones though, they are slow frig killers unless short range fitted, which has its own issues.

The Drake can give you avery good mission turnaround time, provided you do not overtank it for the job at hand.

I personally prefer the HAM Cerberus for L3s, I even fly it with a buffer tank and MWD. The absurd HAM range coupled with range tanking with a lower signature radius can help you finish missions faster than a Drake can...C:

Yeah, Cerberus is a very nice ship for running missions but it needs good skills.

I have a mining alt with decent drone skills, no missile and no real gun skills. She needed standings to reduce refining tax and trade tax. I found a myrmidon drone boat worked well for blitzing level 3s. She didn't have sentries, but was fine with light and medium drones.

Ishtar cleared L3s the fastest for me.

Rapid Light Caracal will do fine in most L3 missions. It hits everything up to cruiser quite well, has a low SP entry point and the same fit can, with a bit better skills fit HAM's.

The lower sig radius of the Caracal and higher base speed mean that you will mitigate much of the incomming damage, and the damage selection is not nerfed like the Drake (ie. not just Kinetic). Also, Rapid Light ammo is dirt cheap, especially the T2 version when compared to HM's and HML's.

Take that up a notch and fly a Navy Caracal with low-grade halo set (all except the Omega) and you have a cheap speed/sig tank ship capable of running many of the L4 missions as well.

Edit; Note, while the Ishtar is a fantastic ship, it is skill intensive and can be a bear to fit unless your fitting skills are top notch - Caracal provides a path to either the Drake or the Tengu (also, the upcoming Navy Drake should be a nice long range HML platform) - use HAM's on the Tengu.

I found the Myrmidon to be a great ship for L3's, using a dual-rep active armor tank and MWD, but this was a year and a half ago, before the drone changes and the battlecruiser rebalance. If your drone skills are better than your missile/turret skills, and you can put a few levels into Battlecruisers, it'll serve very well, boosting your tank and your drones' damage and resilience.

I was wondering if I were the only sane one. Sure, an Ishtar can do ridiculous things to L3 missions, but new player? Drake for missiles, Hurricane for guns, Myrmidon for drones.

If you are low on skills, why not the Gnosis? Free choice of weaponry!!
Little better on skills, obviously Drake.
High skills and lots of ISK.... well, Tengu of course!

Talos works just fine for lvl3's. I run mine with T1 meta 4 large blasters. Very lightly armor tanked with a medium armor rep and a DC. Shield buffer tanked Naga could probably work but I like to have the safety of my 5 light drones.
