... To live up to the many special effects in your trailers promoting EVE.

Here is one example I'm sure most of you have seen:
EVE: Origins

I'll get straight to the point, I want to see in EVE:

  • Bigger explosions! (for the bigger ships)
  • Bigger ships not just exploding, but breaking into separate pieces, and pieces being broken/blown off during battle
  • New, better looking hit-effects by weapons
  • New, better weapon effects in general
  • More damage effects on ships (Fire and what not) so I can tell just by looking if I am hitting shield, armor, or hull
  • Firefights, like the one @ 3:05 in the video, full of horrific beauty

Now, I know that all of this is no small feat, but I am not suggesting these things be implemented tomorrow, or next month, or even next year. But this is what I believe EVE should aspire to, for the battles anyway. Who knows, maybe you guys are working on things like this right now Blink

What do you guys think? Who agrees to improving EVE?

This would not improve EVE. This would only serve to satisfy our pathetic desire for aesthetics in a beautiful game. That being said, I think the current models (*cough*Moa*cough*) need more attention first.

Have you been on the test server?

They've made some improvements to the way ships explode.

There is a great new effective when you get podded too.. you should try it. Big smile

They're making leaps and bounds, improving the cinematic like experience and immersion... like the new transition effect when jumping between systems.

They're defo working on the things you'd described, at an acceptable pace.

No, I've haven't been on the Test server in a really long time haha.. Yeah, I have seen the podding effect and the jump effect (which is amazing :o), and they are impressive. I am definitely looking forward to seeing a bit more of an immersive EVE Online Big smile

They have plans for all of this, as far as I'm aware- they haven't implemented any of it because people insist they want to play EVE on their 10 year old computers.

I'm positive that EVE could be far, far more impressive visually than it is right now with current technology (including things like bringing nebula changes back down to the constellation level rather than region, which I would REALLY like; it'd make a lot of jumps far, far smoother and make all of the nebulae line up better- in some places, they don't, at all, and I can't even tell myself "The light from this nebula at the present day has not yet reached the last system" to suspend disbelief), and then there was also a tesselation thing where as you zoomed into your ship they got more and more detailed. Pretty sure making ships actually break apart as they take extreme amounts of damage wouldn't be all that hard.

Also Felsusguy: I agree with you on the Moa thing (and think they should update all race's ships, to be totally honest) but if they pull a Drake rework rather than a Scorpion/Raven, I'm going to be pissed. (The Drake looks like a toy, especially with that doofy capsule 'bridge' or whatever at the front, and those yellow lines all over the place.)

Lol! Drake is actually quite reasonable compared to say...... Bantam!

yeah..... what happened there?

That being said, I REALLY would like to see more visible ship damage and debris, not just universal wrecks for everything.

CCP is planning to upgrade EVE to DirectX 11. That's the whole reason they're going through and V3-ing the whole universe first. According to what the World of Darkness guy said during his Fanfest presentation, it sounds strongly as though DirectX 11 support is already worked into the game and just needs to be turned on. That said, we need the universe to be in V3 first because the kind of lighting system that comes with DX11 would make things that are still V2 look really.. ..really really bad. It's not the people who are trying to play EVE on potatoes and stone tablets and Commodore 64s, it's the fact that they don't want EVE to look.. well.. terrible.

When we do finally get DirectX 11, we'll be able to have a whole new lighting system that they've already discussed. When you're near the sun, space will be bright. Your ship may even glow if you're close enough. When you're far away from the sun, space will be darker, shadows will be bigger and everything will be more dimly-lit. Your sensors and your overlay will be more useful then, I"m sure. Come to think of it, we may even get to see brackets optimized to not be a terribly laggy nightmare.

They're also going to be giving us Tessellation, which as I understand also allows for a new physics engine based on actual ship shapes and not big bouncy spheres. Bouncing has its place in the world, I'm sure, but it isn't spaceships.

The nebula changes were actually specifically addressed by the art department. They said that the changes are at region-level instead of constellation-level because of client size. If we had to download new nebula data for every single constellation in the game, apparently our clients would be ridiculously super-huge and the installation process would take up both an absurd amount of time and an absurd amount of disk space. That being said, it would be lovely if constellation-level nebula changes were available as an optional add-on, much like it would be lovely if CCP's internal super-high-resolution textures were available as an optional download.

There's a thread about that, by the way. Everyone who's reading this post and not playing EVE on a potato needs to go find it and sign it and suggest that the download be modular, so you can pick and choose which types of assets (skybox, ships, stations, celestials such as rocks / gas clouds / planets) you want to have in super-high quality.

The ships.. they've already been doing quite a bit of work re-designing ships. A lot of them haven't even been released to SiSi yet, let alone TQ. Still, a lot of ships (yes, like the Moa) need a re-design.

Long story short, EVE has made a lot of progress on the graphical side of things but it still has room to make so much more. Fortunately, the art department has got it all figured out and they're working on all the updates at the pace they can. Right now they're V3ing things and redesigning ships.

Yeah and Odyssey supposed to be about exploration and we won't go anywhere we wouldn't already be.

If you're going to complain about something, you should just make your accusations openly instead of hiding behind vague implications. Don't you think so?
