What does this mean? Is there a way to link my Steam account with my EVE account? And if so, what does it do? Automatic log-in? Or is it just a placeholder feature?

This thread will probably be locked. I have this error also, but it should not prevent you from logging in. The official place to post about this is here. Cheers.

Thanks. I'm not having trouble logging in, just wondering what the message meant.

Actually, it's quite interesting...

The message _only_ appears when Steam is running.
So there appear to be plans on Steam Community integration or such!

// Edit:

Also, when I try to close Steam while the Launcher is open and 'connected' with Steam, I get a message...
"Waiting for EVE Online to shut down"
followed by...
"Please close EVE Online before exiting Steam."

A sincere question, why would anyone want to go through Steam to play eve?

Some people use Steam as their primary method of storing games and collecting them...
I've used Steam for years, never had a single issue with it and any cons it may have is far outweighed by the benefits for me personally (and I understand other have had issues and do have issue with elements of it, but each to their own).

They may have bought EVE through Steam and gotten used to logging in through the Steam client. Understandable, if a few extra steps are involved.

While I in fact originally got into Eve via Steam, for a while now I have moved it to a different location and haven't started it from within Steam since.

What I described earlier happens when you launch Eve the normal way, completely un-steam-related. (That is, click a shell link leading to "[Eve Installation Path]\eve.exe")
If you coincidently have Steam running at that time, the above happens. If not, nothing special happens.
