Security missions are fairly one dimensional. For the most part this is ok, but a number of new missions types could be easily added with out much trouble, or any new features. Here are some examples.

Repair missions. The classic, 'one of our destroyers is down, go rescue it' mission type. Basically you are told that an important faction ship was ambushed and contact with it has been lost. You go find it, maybe using probes and scanners if you want to include exploration or else just warp to the general location, clear out a few waves of enemies. Find the ship, it is in bad shape and its warp drive is damaged. You need to repair it using remote structure repair or armor repairs, or whatever. Mission done.

Actual escort missions. You are told to escort some group of colonists in their industrials and their 1 or 2 crappy defense ships to some location. You warp to them and meet up with them. They warp through an acceleration gate, you follow. Waves of easy to kill enemies appear, you clear them out. The mission clause is something like, "at least one colony ship must survive". Mission done.

I am by no means suggesting that these missions be the norm. They could however easily be included in a future update, and would add to the overall feel that is Eve.

If you really want to get fun you could also have some "race" missions here and there too. Someone found something really nifty, first one there gets it. Warp in, find a bunch of other ships there, and you all haul ass to be the first one to get there. You can toss in some environmental hazards, maybe a rogue drone infestation or merc raid, and if you decide to try to get ahead by ganking the other people racing for it they'll all turn hostile and start shooting at you and each other.

"Missile Command" missions. Sansha's Nation or rogue drones are targeting some facility for some reason, but due to the low availability of resources for them in the system they're using suicide riders. Small, fast ships that explode on contact are racing towards the object and you have to shoot them down before they reach it and blow it up. Of course this could also turn into a quasi-Repair mission too so maybe if you have a couple structures spread out and you have to keep them all safe it'd make it interesting. Perhaps +1 structure per level of the agent giving it?
