Doesn't matter which one you choose there will be times when the other would be better. Overcoming and finding workarounds for those limitations is part of the game.

It sounds as though you like lasers but feel that missiles may have better advantages. Rest assured that all the weapons systems and ships are well balanced. Make your choice based on your gut feeling, rather than envelope comparisons. In the end the one that you find to be most aesthetically appealing will be the best for you.

to add to this: most weapon systems ARE indeed balanced but most new players will end up spending most of their time using small and medium weapon systems as large weapon systems are:

1. Expensive to maintain
2. Skill intensive.

The best medium weapon platforms are projectiles and missiles for pve with t2 pulse laz0rs coming in a close third (skill intensive).
