Forums and Player opinions

Hi,

Have you ever seen a thread or discussion, agreed or disagreed with the OP (whether they're a dev or player) and wanted to add your own thoughts, only to find that by page 13 (or however long the thread has gotten) that the topic has been derailed, subverted or devolved into a shouting match between two very vocal players or corps?

You have to admit that forums are an inaccurate method of gauging player opinion on issues with games. It's fine for debate and discussion (or outright fighting) but for getting solid numbers on support or rejection it's hit and miss, with alt posts, corp/clan backing or sifting through repeated memes and cliches messing up details.

Then I was remembering something last night about a game called 'Endless Space' by Amplitude and that during development they had a system dubbed 'Games2Gether'. The way the system worked was that feature, faction, lore and character ideas were boiled down to three different options or styles by the dev team and then the player base would vote between the three for what would be used in-game. The higher the voter turn out the more accurate player opinion was and then details could be hammered out in the forums.

My point is that after seeing the new CSM voting system, CCP have created a tool that could be used for similar purpose. I'm not saying every decision should be up for vote, but the ones where the devs seek player support could be presented in this way. Who takes over what faction? The New Gallente President? Should this NPC corp have success or difficulty? It could even be used to choose a player base voted (minor) feature per expansion.

The Possibility exists and (I think) has potential.

I'm Naomi Hale and this is my favourite thread on the forums.

Eve is far too full of well-organized trolls. You don't want them voting for changes to the game mechanics or the lore.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

Oh, I dunno. There's a guy in another thread claiming that SP is the sole factor that decides who wins a fight in this game. That'd sure get rid of most of my dumb losses in very short order. Lol

No, your rights end in optimal+2*falloff

Getting players to vote for anything is a bad idea.

Just think, if it was done by voting, the goons could design the game for you.

A game as complex as EvE has too many diverse interests that compete against each other. I don't think your idea will work because too many people push their own style of game-play, there's too many trolls, to much emo-raging. The passions run deep in this game. There'd be too much voice given to minority interests.

The complexity in EvE is mind-blowing, but that's a good thing imho. It's like an highly diverse eco-system, in time the system rebalances itself (Market forces and all that) or else is fixed "soon".

Just chill and enjoy the ride, like the silent majority.
