as the title says, how much effort would it be to implement a Randomiser of serial numbers for ships that have them.
Example

keeping it random and client side as to not let people put anything obscene on the side " even though that would be funny "

opinions ?

Your about as much use as a condom dispenser in the Vatican.

I'd rather see ship names on the side of the ship, along with making the ship name field at least twice as long as it is now...

So, you're a bounty hunter. No, that ain't it at all. Then what are you? I'm a bounty hunter.

But there are already "random" serial numbers. Each unique (non-stackable) item has a unique number attached to it in the database, so that when you undock one of your three Rifters, the server knows you're undocking in the one fitted with autocannons and not the one full of PLEX cards, or vice versa.

You can access this number from the API if you like.

Now, as to why you would want it on the side of your ship, especially if it were only visible locally, that I cannot fathom.

Why not? It'd be cool, and having the same serial number on every naga I lose is weird.

Exactly my point, with all the work CCP has done with odyssey you don't think we should be able to add decals and paint jobs to our ships by now, 10 years on and not a single customisation option for our ships ? ( T3's Don't count )

+1 for go faster stripes on ceptors

CCP is already beginning the work required to allow for ship customization.

The first step is to V3 every single graphical asset in the whole game. This will allow for a new lighting system that takes advantage of DX11 and enables new features like ship customization and Tessellation.

yea, but i'll rather hae the possibility to replace the faction logo by the corp or alliance logo, THAT would be great

A random serial number on the side of ships would be cool for the first 30 minutes but it's not like anyone is gonna glory over the different number on a ship every time they get a new one.

What I would like to see is a graphical indicator of a ship's use. Not just looking like a new ship all the time but scarred and battleworn so if you have had a ratting ship that you have used a lot for the past year, it shows. If your ship has survived many pvp fights, it shows. There should be a noticable difference between PVP worn hulls and PVE worn. Perhaps graphics that are based on the amount of isk you destroyed with that ship.

I'd like to be able to look at a ship and know that that ship is:
- new. Hasn't had much time outside the station.
- aged. The hull shows evidence of use. Has it been used for lots of travel? Maybe an old industrial. Has it been used for PVE? Who knows, but you can see the signs of age.
-a pvp ship. This scars of this ship's past show serious signs of combat. It also appears the crew have put markings on the ship to show it's victories. Enough enemy destroyed and enough battles survived, the ship may become a legendary icon

I, for one, resent the notion that our ships should look like ratty pieces of space junk. Maybe you don't take meticulous care of your multi-million-ISK flying death machines, but I certainly do.

This I believe would be interesting but not quite logical. Ships have shields, which protect the material within. So, I think if this were implemented it would be more logical to base it off of armor damage taken and/or hull damage.

mmm, pretty hard to implement, i forsee many issues (repackaged ship etc...), and honnestly, will never happen.

what imao, could be implemented tho, would be a hull damaging related to armor damage (a first layer), then the ship falling apart as hull get chewed in.

this would be both consistent, and technically possible to do, however this would require dev time to create the models, AND could have a dramatic effect on the performances during large scale battles, cause updating all on field ship models according to their respective armor / hull status, going back and forth (logi etc...) would probably have massive impact on the ressources required

This,
