What is EvE's flair?

What makes EvE truly unique?
Like how the Command and Conquer series had the MCV and build patterns or how Battlefield had a combined arm simulation and Arma, Arma made you appreciate how it was all a game.

Being allowed to completely destroy a person that you dislike is something entirely unique. Sure, in other MMOs you can "kill" their characters but nothing is a better feeling, I imagine than knowing something you did could set somebody behind weeks if not more.

EVE's current minimum is 37 pieces of flair.

The player driven market/fact that 95% of items are player produced, and the single shard universe.

The feeling that anything you do has an impact on the world (no matter how small that impact might be).

Being able to train anything with just one character.

Very long skill tree that's likely to keep growing.

CCP not producing linear content that you have to do in order to do more linear content.

Choices, you can choose to do what you want and if you're missing out on content it by your own choice and not game design (there are a few minor exceptions which hopeful will be addressed).

No achievements in game, which is a big plus.

Not a theme park (lets hope it never gets that way).

Everyone playing in the same universe.

Training whilst offline, which means you can get on with RL and still feel that you're progressing in-game.

Just the pure hardcore badness of death actually meaning something really significant.

Not some BS corpse run, not "BRB, I have to go grab my stuff from reclaim", and sure as peanutbutter not "wait 30 seconds before you can hit spacebar and respawn".

In Eve, dead is dead. Your ship is gone. You might be able to recover a few modules and a bit of the cargo, but chances are whoever popped you got that.

If you got podded, your implants are gone.

If you weren't paying attention to your clone, some of your SP are gone.

This aspect of the game makes at least half of the MMO players in the world unwilling to play Eve. But the other half is enough, as witness the fact that Eve is 10 years old and still vibrantly alive.

The only other MMO I have seen over that span of time is Anarchy Online, which was in a sad state by its 5th or 6th birthday, and fossilized by its tenth.

EVE's main flair, for me, is creatiing an electrifying sense of immersion in virtue of the fact that you have to be alert or you'll lose stuff, and you may lose stuff even if you are alert!

I don't like the sandbox model in fantasy games, I prefer a cute story; but with an s-f game like this, it's the closest thing any of us are likely to ever get to actually flying a spaceship in a dangerous part of the Universe. It's a ridiculously simplified model, but it models enough to allow you to dream ... that you are there. Out in the infinite abyss, stars sparkling around you.

It's the most immersive MMO around (that's still of a modern quality). And I'm an immersion hound, so here I am.

EVE is EVE.

Why do I like bacon? It's a pigs ass but we like it.
Why do we like bewbies? There isn't much remarkable about them. Women have been pointing it out for years but we like em.

EVE is like Bacon and Bewbies. Dunno why, don't care. It's just good.

What makes it unique?

Is it that everyone plays in and affects the same persistent world as everyone else does?

Is it that the skill system is ingeniously built to give the veterans the perks they desire while keeping the newbie relevant?

Is it that almost every activity in EVE can be considered "PvP" since almost everything brings you in [direct or indirect] conflict with another player?

Is it that ship on ship violence is allowed in some fashion everywhere [except starter systems] in the game?

Is it that morally questionable acts of betrayal and thievery are not only encouraged, but celebrated?

Is is that the DEVs often troll their own players in various subtle (and not so subtle) ways?

No. EVE's flair obviously lies its wardrobe.

I don't eat pork and how do you make 5 pounds of fat look good? put a nipple on it.

Anyway - on topic - For me the flair is the ability to do whatever you want and chose a non-linear path.

Its hardcore nature and sandbox gameplay. There's really nothing else like EVE out there. Well, maybe Dust 514, but that needs time to spread its wings.

Scams, theft and griefing. And the fact that generosity, honesty and kindness actually mean something because they exist.

in most other mmos you can't kill them if they are on your side though. and that is what I love about eve, you can shoot anyone simply because you want to! Honestly I've had some moments where the most frustrating thing was I couldn't team kill some one.
