Hey, well, it's that time again. Time to reformat my trusty Dell. (don't ask why Blink)

Go through this every other month or so, you know what I mean. Download Windows updates erry day, etc etc...

But, I wonder if I can make this transition more a bit more seamless for my inevitable return to the realm of New Eden.

Meaning, I want to boot up Eve like I left it. Not having to reorganize everything including but not limited to:

  • UI Window Placement
  • Username Login List
  • Station Container Configurations
  • Esc Menu Settings (Dispay, Sound, Voice)
  • Bookmark Location Folders
  • Market Quickbar and Folders Therein
  • Wallet Transactions

I know how to 'export overview' so that one is cool. If I just copy/paste my Eve folder (inside my steamapps folder) will it work from a new hardrive image?

I’ve not use Eve with a Steam account so your mileage may vary with this help.
As a fallback you could always just back up the \CCP\Eve folder ‘just in case’.

Most of the settings you require are held on the server so will transfer with the new setup.

Things like your log in list are stored with your character and can be found in;
C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\e_ccp_eve_tranquility

I back up all the files in the 2 folders here, both settings and cache, settings store all your character information and cache stores all your mail, pictures etc.

Don’t forget to run DXSetup from the \CCP\EVE\bin\DirectX folder to install the files required by Eve or it may not start correctly.

With regards to the Market quickbars I don’t know.

Good luck.

I can confirm that this works. Did this when I put EVE on my laptop, just copied from the desktop machine. Only thing I had to adjust was window sizing.

You mean copying the game folder and placing it in the Program Files?

For future reference:

1. Copy C: | Users | username | CCP | to the new disk image.
2. Backup the 5 folders in C: | Program Files | EVE Online | and replace them in your new installation.
3. Run repair.exe in that folder to fix the incompatibility of the new installation.

This will backup the new installation on a different disk image to a perfect replica of you last login.fect replica of you last login.

As the windows user profiles may be stored somewhere else depending on how Windows is setup, one can also refer to the following list of default directories for EVE to find them:
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/EVE_default_directories

And to backup or restore the local client settings (folder setup for notes, contacts and drones; market quickbars, Overview settings etc.), all that is needed really is the "settings" folder that needs to be copied into the proper place to restore. The cache is easily rebuilt and will basically just waste space on the backup. By the time you restore that, it's likely that most of the cached data in the backup is outdated and will be replaced by the client anyway.

As for restoring the actual client installation, I personally recommend using the latest installer whenever possible to do that, but copying the game directory, running the repair tool to get it to the correct version and eventually reinstalling DirectX from the "bin\DirectX" subdirectory as described in earlier posts should usually do it as well.
