Can't select a character after logging in

This happens on both my accounts.

I launch EVE and log in without problems, but at character selection screen there is just 3 empty slots. Sometimes one slot has a name without a portrait and other times all characters are there with names and portraits, but nothing happens when I click them.

If I right click on one slot and select 'Set Active' a loading bar comes up saying 'Fetching characters' or something. The loading bar finishes, but still nothing happens.

Almost every time I log in and get stuck at this screen I also get a socket closed error after a minute or two. Selecting restart doesn't help.

If I press ESC the options menu comes up and I can change settings. I can log off and try again, but clicking quit does nothing so I have to open task manager every time to close EVE.

I've tried closing all other programs before running EVE, clearing the cache, repairing the client, running it in safe mode and nothing has worked so far. The only other similar case I found on the forums was this guy who fixed it by repairing his client through steam, but I don't have the steam version.

It's been 3 days now since I have been able to log in. Please help me! Cry

You can run the repair tool from the Launcher by clicking on the "Wrench" icon and looking under EVE Client Settings at the bottom.

or from :

C:\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\repair.exe

Start eve with the logserver running, do any exceptions show up in there?
