EVE's development has gone down the route of pandering to the vocal minority. Game players hate to be herded down a path dictated by a certain faction in the game, they always have and always will. It is a game breaker for a lot of players imo.

Solecist Project...." They refuse to play by the rules and laws of the game and use it as excuse ..." " They don't care about how you play as long as they get to play how they want."

Welcome to EVE.

Typically I burn out every year or 2 and then just log in for a month to change skills, but I'm always back.

Started playing in dec. 2006 and was hooked within the first cpl hrs.

Part of the allure of space is the unknown and the propensity for rapid change. If everything stays the same things become predictable and less exciting. People have different opinions on WiS but for me a few years ago even the notion of that being added to the game (Soon™) was really exhilarating.

EVE's development seems to have gone down a more passive/safe route. I know people who left because of that to.

Like it or not, Incarna brought new content to the game. Admittedly it was widely hated content, but at least it was new content. We haven't seen anything really new in almost two years. Longer if you don't count Incarna.

That's a collateral damage of Incarna. It teached CCP in the harshest possible way (20% layoffs included) the same lesson that explains why the current MMO market splits into WoW, WoW clones and EVE: do what does work.

Do what does work so focus on FiS and FiS alone
Do what does work so fix/iterate what's already in the game
Do what does work so don't innovate inside of EVE, but outside of EVE (DUST, WoD)

That's the natural consquence of growing old, too. EVE top brass grows old and conservative, the game becomes so complex that just shifting content it's a nightmare of consequences -let alone add complexity to an already complex game-, the players who keep playing become focused on their special interests and defend them fiercely and all in all the game stagnates.

It's a law of Systemics: what leads a system to succeed, also leads to its eventual collapse. EVE's "evesity" is going to kill it sooner or later.

The usual fix would be EVE 2, and CCP is already making that game. They call it World of Darkness.

Thing is, this expansion marks us getting 18 months of sorely needed fixes that the community was screaming for before Incarna came out. You can even see that CCP is starting to dream big again (see CCP Seagull's presentation in the EVE Keynote or CCP Presents) ... so things are going to be getting interesting again, soon™

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

I went from one annual account, to two, to five, to six annual paid accounts

aside from the gameplay, or the periods of merely logging to skill queue, the things EVE keeps me from doing make it worthwhile. (movies, eating out, going out for something to do, etc)

I'm down to a tank of gas every two weeks. incredible.

plus I finally found this gel seat pad at a local retailer(for $60!), and it's amazing. anyway

What would people say would be the most common thing that happens with players?
I know many try the 30 days and run screaming, also know we have players that have stayed subbed from day 1.

I find myself in Ibises sometimes, when I dock in a pod and I'm too lazy to buy a shuttle...

I think more people would be hooked from the get-go if they got a ship that was cooler than 1 mining laser and 1 civilian turret

lasers. something with four lasers, and a target right at the very first undock. CCP should do something about the giant "ok what now?" feeling on day 1

after that, it's just sharing in the suck with the rest of us. frame it how you want, we all play in the same code. probably the main thing preventing a riot is that it's a shared experience.

I too had a moment where I was just fed up with the game, and didn't sub for about 3 months. The reason was mainly the realization I was never going to be able to compete with the really hardcore players. I evaluated whether or not I was willing to use multiple accounts, get a Falcon alt, get a Booster alt, get a Hauling alt... enfin, you get the picture. Someone willing to throw more money at the game would always have better stuff then me. How was I supposed to ever compete?

Then it hit me. I can kill them and take their stuff. Brilliant! I totally changed my play style when I got back to the game. Once a run-of-the-mill mission runner in hisec, I decided to climb up the pvp learning cliff. I soon discovered a few tricks that saw my performance in pvp skyrocket. Suddenly I was no longer the victim, but I was killing things left and right! People fled when they saw me on scans! I mattered. I am no longer just hisec filler, I have an effect on other players that can no longer be ignored.

Stepped out of the themepark into the sandbox: I have been subbed ever since and just resubbed for a full year.

Now if i could log a cyno toon in dual boxing from one account, that would open possibilities up for me, but as it is i've kinda finished the game.

Wow ! Shocked I guess you found the End of the Internet as well ?

There's a point where more of the same loses it's appeal. This applies to Eve and the intertubes, there's a range of things on, then there's miles of more more more of the same which can make excitable kiddies jump for joy i guess.
I'm sure thinking this makes me a bad person, or maybe only from the point of view of those with the personalities of goldfish, and the disposition of bricks.

Some quit due to real-time training EVE offers. This got especially bad after CCP added "time to train" line to the ship skill requirements info sheet. I had a guy browse the ships (and he liked them a lot), then find the one he liked, and he asked me how long it would take to fly one. I told him to open the skill requirements, and there it said something like 180 days (though I probably remember it wrong, it's been a while). At which point he just laughed and walked away. Another similar case also happened recently, it was only about 64 days of training, but still too long. This fellow asked me if there was a way to speed this up, and when I told him no, short of buying a new character from the Bazaar with existing skills, he also quit.

As a sidenote, after they informed me that they weren't interested, I pointed out that the training time requirement was merely to get into the hull. I guesstimated how long it would take to train drones, turrets/missiles/navigation/core skills, etc., to where they could actually make decent use of the hull, and all of them without exception almost died laughing. Something for CCP to ponder, as I keep saying for what seems like years because...well..,it's been years.

I think I've said this before, Eve isn't aimed at the current "instant gratification" style of gamer who needs to be able to use something straight away. Eve is long term, and requires commitment to play. If they are laughing at those skill times, they probably weren't cut out for Eve anyway.
