When freighters came out back in '05, they were originally supposed to be just for laying outpost eggs. Commodity trading was mostly a side effect. It took years of whining before they were given the ability to interact with stuff in space. They were always intended to be defenseless massive haulers, nothing more, and I think you will be hard pressed to get CCP to give any more than they already have. I hope.

Freightering via stargate not safe enough for you? Get a Jump Freighter and hop through lowsec station systems.
