How can we "fix" hacking?

There has been a lot of flak directed at the exploding loot pinata mechanic in odyssey. As a ninja salvager and explorer, I have no problem with it...

BUT even I admit it feels a tad out of place. It doesn't break immersion but it does move closer to the edge. So for the more vocal among us, how would you suggest we fix it without dramatically changing it from a mechanics perspective? I'm also laying out a few rules to keep this constructive:

1. This only affects how loot is "delivered", not the hacking mini game.

2. It needs to match the current system of loot distribution. By that I mean it needs to include extra loot that is only accessible when done as a group activity. This loot distribution is absolutely vital, as it keeps exploration solo friendly while also allowing us to bring friends.

3. It needs to be reasonable. I know that should probably go without saying, but if we want this mechanic changed it needs to be something that can be implemented easily, and works with existing mechanics.

So what can we come up with?

My initial suggestion: lower can move speed to an extremely low amount like 50m/s but keep the rapid decay. It still encourages friends but feels a bit less "gamey" and twitchy.

  • The ship wreck has a map.
  • There are locked doors blocking the path to the goodies.
  • Your hacking allows you to open paths for your cargo drones to retrieve goodies
  • Another player can hack in at the same time and get goodies from locations he hacked open.
  • Maybe have several entry points that allow access to different sections.
  • Maybe require more than one entry point being hacked at the same time to allow access to bigger goodies.
  • Maybe add a time limit on the hacking from first entry and hacking with more than one player at the same time will allow farther exploration.
  • Maybe add passcards or other consumed items that allow faster access, add more time on the hacking countdown or allow opening of otherwise sealed sections.

Did I mention no exploding piñatas yet? Well, no exploding piñatas.

Oh and blatantly steal the hacking game from here.

Step #1: Check if it's actually broken.

If it's broken, fix it.
If it works, improve it.

Alternatively, if it's not broken, join of with other anti-progressive luddites and climb a tree.

…and the result is the same: wait and see. But sure, if you like:

Step #1: Check if it's actually broken or in need of improvement.

My point is that people are complaining about something they haven't even touched. Suggesting “fixes” or “improvements” (read: “don't touch my non-gameplay!”) at this point ist he anti-progressive movement you're railing against.

A valid point. I don't consider it broken, as from a design perspective it has a certain elegance. I just want to help the gameplay to reach that same level of elegance. Anyways this is just a thought experiment. I think the ship map idea violates every ruIe put in the OP. Lol

I know must of us cringe at WIS. But Looting / Hacking / Salvaging would be a great place for this.

You leave your ship and walk around the target ship / platform/ station looking for loot. The environments could be epic.

PS _ I HATE the minigame

I happen to think the exploding loot mechanic is a great idea.

Enjoying the rain today? ;)

  • Im going to stop you right there.

What is it about that last few years in Eve that makes you actually believe that CCP is capable of letting ANYONE unlock a door around here...

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Normally the I find the usual gang of trolls here to be pretty annoying, but every once in awhile, comedic genius.

    That monocle looks ridiculous.
