General Question Regarding Ship classes

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to eve, and I'm confused on something. I know there are different classes of ships (frigate, cruiser, etc) and Tech 1 and Tech two versions of these. My main question is this - Is there any reason, given you have the money and skills, to not fly the best ship possible? I guess I'm wondering if the T1 frigates are of any use whatsoever in the game once you start getting your skills and money rolling in.

How does Eve make sure these ships don't just become useless?

Thank you!

There is no best ship.
Frigates never lose their usefulness, especially in pvp.
Also look at how well large weapons do against small fast targets. Hint: not well.

There are two things that you can find out while playing and progressing.

1. A bigger ship does not always equate to a better or more fun to use ship.
2. Combat ships are used as a means to blow up stuff. That also means your stuff will get blown too. If you can get a job done in a ship that costs ten times less than another, there is no reason not to use it.

An example. Here are two EW ships that can be used in small gangs. The first one is a T2 Electronic Warfare ship, and the second a T1 frigate that is bonused in EW.

[Kitsune, SG Rainbow Kitsune]

Type-D Attenuation Signal Augmentation
'Hypnos' Signal Distortion Amplifier I

Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I
'Hypnos' Ion Field ECM I
Enfeebling Phase Inversion ECM I
BZ-5 Neutralizing Spatial Destabilizer ECM
'Umbra' White Noise ECM

[Empty High slot]
Prototype 'Arbalest' Light Missile Launcher
Prototype 'Arbalest' Light Missile Launcher

Small Particle Dispersion Augmentor I
Small Ionic Field Projector I

[Griffin, SG Rainbow Griffin]

'Arbalest' Rocket Launcher I

The first one costs 31 million isk, and the second 3.1mil. Which would you prefer to lose every night?

Over the course of your career in eve youll find that there are some goals you want to achieve and taht varios ships are more effective for achieving those goals than others. But that take quite research and googling. First you should find thing you want to do (blow up players, haul stuff, mine, kill npcs) and then google for a while which ship would be best or at least enough for it and what investment in skill time and money it takes.

I'm almost three years in and only just recently learned to fly cruisers.... Let alone the fancy stuff....

Given the money and the skills there is absolutely no reason not to fly the best ship possible...

The trick is that the "best ship" is always situational, it's not always the biggest or the fastest or even the shiniest.

What those guys said. I've been playing for almost...4 years now? Anyways, the point is, I haven't flown a battleship in over a year. Hell I almost *never* fly battlecruisers except when I'm trying to help out friends. My primary ships are strategic cruisers/T3 ships, regular cruisers, t1 frigates, and assault frigs. That means I use the smallest class of ship, and the medium class of ship. I dabble in the medium heavy, but rarely.

All ships are useful. There will never come a time in eve when a ship isn't useful for *something*. If such a time were to come, eve would die.

Edit: And yeah the best ship possible depends on the situation. When I'm going solo PvP, the best ship for me is either a Republic Fleet Firetail for fighting in scram range, or a Wolf.

For exploring lowsec, the best ship is either a gnosis, Pilgrim, Loki, Proteus, Tengu, Legion, or a Cloak+MWD Myrmidon.

It's incredibly difficult to simplify things like that. Truthfully, battleships are probably the *least* useful class of ship in the game. They're only really used in sieges or blobs at this point, or missions.

I've flown pretty much everything short of titans across all areas on New Eden.
Small cruiser gangs, huge battleship heavy fleets, slowcat (capital ship) fleets and everything in between.

My 'main' characters have well over 100mil SP each. What am I enjoying flying right now? Solo T1 frigates!
I'm flying them pretty much exclusively against anything and everything I can, enjoying myself and learning new things in the process. Don't discount the humble T1 frigate, they are some of the most fun ships in the game!

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
