It keeps you from doing bad things..unless you really want to.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

It there so CCP doesn't have to listen to people complain when they get themselves blown up.

If you set it to red, you are able to shoot stuff and you don't get a pop-up warning. Meaning that if you misclick, you die in highsec.
If you set it to green, you are unable to do anything bad that gives you suspect or outlaw status.
Yellow is only allowing you to do stuff that gives you suspect status (giving other players the right to shoot you), but not outlaw status (CONCORDOKKEN'D)

Would strongly suggest you to read this:

Prevents you from doing something that may let others shoot you, such as taking from their can or shooting at a suspect.

Or, as others said... training wheels, so CCP doesn't have to listen to whines.

Just set it to red otherwise it gets in the way of anything enjoyable in New Eden.

They just changed the "are you sure you want to steal?" and "are you sure you want to shoot?" prompts into a drop-down menu.

Also, they removed can aggression and put a "duel" button in its place. I don't understand why they would do that, I guess they were bored.

Banana.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.

During the internationally famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race, Safety is the penultimate checkpoint, 35 kilometers from the finish at Nome, Alaska.

Also, leaving the safety on does NOT protect you from doing something that incites girlfriend aggro. I've tested this. It's not gone well.

Setting it to anything other than red would prevent the comedy bonanza of CONCORD visits resulting from misclicks during pre roam duels in hi sec.

I used to absolutely love sitting outside the rookie system stations in a cloaky ship, watching first-day noobs accidentally get the concordoken, then scream like kindergarteners in local...

I think it has something to do with high sec but seeing as I'm not involved, I didn't look it up.

Reality has an almost infinite capacity to resist oversimplification.
