New Mission Type - Singly Sharded "Silence the Informant"

So after watching the "Catch a Dev" event, CCP Rise (or was it Fozzie, I forget which), noted that the event was nice in how it provoked combat across space. As the devs were hunted down by them, the players inevitably found each other, sparking battles that far outlasted the devs' presence. If the process could be automated, then similar fun could be had all the time.

The idea goes like this, borrowing from the "Silence the Informant" mission already in existence, an "informant" steals important data from some NPC corporation somewhere. The corporation then places a bounty on the informant, who, instead of hiding out in a dead space pocket, goes on a run through New Eden (perhaps trying to cross the cluster on his way to a "hideout" where he can sell the data). As he journeys, his location is relayed somehow (just as the devs were tracked through their video feeds... perhaps the stolen data has a "tracking device" embedded in it). Essentially, it becomes "winner takes all" as players (bounty hunters if you will) from throughout the game may try to interdict the informant's ship. The group that succeeds in blowing him out of the stars is appropriately rewarded.

Now unlike in the mission, the "informant" needn't be an NPC himself. A player would make a far more wily opponent. The mechanics behind this aren't terribly complicated; basically, the player would "accept" the mission of escorting (or possibly also stealing) the NPC data. At this point, that pilot accepts the role of walking target (and perhaps gains a "permanent" suspect flag for as long as he carries the data). As the "fox" in the fox hunt, if he makes it to his destination, he too may be rewarded by "selling" the data to rival NPCs.

I really like this concept in general. There's a few issues that need to be ironed out along the way.

1. Solo pilots will have an extremely hard time with this; all it would take is an interceptor at a gate and their days are over. The rewards should be sufficiently large enough that a small gang (4-8 players) would be enticed to help.

2. Alternately, instead of a Suspect flag, perhaps a variation on the Kill Rights system could be used. This would help inhibit "blobbing" a single player with a ton of ships.

3. A covert ops cloak can make this really easy for the person running the information. Perhaps the item they are moving disrupts cloaking, or maybe what they are transporting is a ship itself that cannot fit a coovert cloak ("We at the Federation Navy need this experimental ship (Gnosis) smuggled across New Eden.")

4. What happens if the item is traded or stuck into a courier contract? The consequences of the mission (kill rights / suspect flag / etc) should probably follow the item, and anyone who has the item should be able to turn it in for a reward.

The general concept is great, with a few of these issues addressed I think it could be a great bit of content to add to Eve.

You might want to change the title of you post, though. This doesn't seem to involve any sharding of Eve, and the concept of shards in Eve is an anathema. : > Maybe title it "Dangerous Courier / PvP Missions" or something like that.

This is rather a good idea. Hell, you might even have found a use for Deep Space Transports.

To solve the cloaking problem, perhaps the "Data" in question is actually an implant (perhaps somewhere in slots 7-10)? The implant itself:

  • disallows the use of cloaking devices,
  • acts as the "Tracking device",
  • prohibits the item from being traded after the mission starts, and
  • guarantees the data is destroyed if the pilot is podded.
  • It also guarantees the pilot must be podded, which is certainly a risk enhancer.
