Returning Player - "Holy crap, how do I make ISK with production?!"

Posting on a forum alt because I'm embarrassed to feel so dumb.

Background - I started playing EVE about 3-4 years ago. (I can't remember). My original character was a miner/mission runner. I never really had much ISK. I didn't like playing "conventionally" to make ISK. So I decided to start playing "unconventionally". So FW farming, scamming, corp thefts, "Buddy Invites"... all these strange ways to make money left me with 20 billion ISK right now. Only problem is... FW is nerfed, corp thefts require too much planning and there's a cooldown, Buddy Invites are nerfed and competition has reduced profits to nothing... scamming is still okay but it's really hit or miss and you have to be online for hours spamming the contract...

So I decided to try production a few months ago. Producing certain rigs I was making about 45 mil per day. Pretty nice. Every 20 days I had just about enough ISK for 2 plex. I eventually sold that character though (I was only using about 5% of his SP...) and started a new toon on that account with plan to transfer to my main account (only need 1 plex FTW).

However, in these months, the profit margins on this rigs have dropped to...10 mil per day. I AM SAD PANDA.

I look up other T1 products... very very low margins, very slow movement rate. SAD SAD. Everyone tells me to do T2 production... but I don't have the time nor the patience to train and log into 10 different alts each day to manage T2 production. I know the profits are good, but ****...I only have 2 hours a day at most.

I am very sad panda. Someone halp. :( I have an extensive collection of BPOs but nothing seems profitable. :(

I would like to add that the alt I'm training is going to have perfect T1 production skills, perfect mining/refining, and able to fly cloaky haulers and freighters before I transfer him.

My current main can fly freighters and Orcas, can fly cloaky haulers if I retrain Industrial V (got podded fk...), and right now is training up for a T3 with good scanning skills. Security status is below -5 though so I need to get that back up...

I have about maybe 2-4 hours a day, every other day, to play EVE. I would like to make enough for 1 PLEX each month, don't care if that only leaves me with 10 mil profits for the month. Just want to keep my character training for free for the next year until I have more time.

That can't be the answer, it's too simple.

Drakes are extremely popular, so they are always in high demand.

Hurricanes, too!

Okay, I'm about to suggest something that seems taboo to suggest here in EVE - Planetary Interaction. Seriously. I'll quote myself from another post that I just left on this forum (guy wanting guidance).

Quote:
...my frank recommendation is this: look at what P2/3 products are in constant demand. And I mean constant - some of these PI products fluctuate depending on what's being produced out there. Some standards that never change: Hobgoblin II's need Guidance Systems to make; POS fuel needs Robotics, Coolant, Mechanics, and E. Uranium; T2 Missiles, HAMS, etc need Rocket Fuel; etc. ... All these products are consumed rapidly and often, and the demand remains constant. If you produce these, you'll never see your profit margins shift rapidly and can predict your income. It's up to you and what your desire is.

One last thing: whatever you choose, stick with it. Changing your PI setup constantly gets costly and messes with your production outflow rates way more than you want. Once you dedicate yourself to it, stay with it. Only change if the market drops so hard that it makes you change. The only little changes you should be making are the tweaking on the P0 end to maximize the output for the factories, which takes time (if you are that anal about it). ...

Are you familiar at all with PI? If not, quick additional advice - avoid Highsec Custom Offices unless you're that scared of taking a hauler into LS/Null. Since you said you did FW, I'll assume you're not risk adverse Big smile

HS CO's should only be used for very passive production that is used for specific needs, or if a player is extremely scared of being shot at - the profit margins are too slim otherwise. If CCP ever allows us to blow up and replace Concord's Custom Offices (ohplzohplz more pvp in HS Twisted ), then that rule will change.

I left out the important part:

IF you have a POCO with low/no taxes, and
IF you produce nothing but, say, coolant and robotics

THEN you should have no problem paying for your account with a few million isk to spare, ceteris paribus.

1) Do Math.
2) Press Buttons.
3) ????
4) Profit

You can replace most of 1) with IPH. Which you can google for yourself unless the all seeing eye of Zifrian catches wind of this thread.

I have to agree with Coffee. Given that you don't hae much time online, PI seems like the best bang for your buck. Do it in low-sec though.

As for T2 production, I dabble a bit in that using 40 slots for manufacture and a POS for invention. I think I turn over about 6bil a month in revenue and probably clear a steady 2 per month in profits with peaks around 3 if I'm in the mood to keep on top of things.

It's not a lot of isk but I'm organized so it only takes me an hour or 2 of moving stuff around in the weekend and 20 min a day to tend to the jobs. In terms of isk per hour that's about on par with casual ratting in null-sec with the advantage that it has a large passive component.

If at first you don't succeed, go back to what you were doing.
