Is this a common thing and what should I look for?

Also I plan on buying the game so should I take these offers?

It is common. What happens is that if you subscribe on an account created by someone's invitation, they receive a PLEX. which is worth about 400-450M on the current market.

If you're already planning on subscribing to the game, it might be a good idea. And if someone tries to scam you out of the promised ISK, petition it. GMs take scams with PLEX and newer players very seriously.

I think it is the single most valuable thing to do as a new player.

200M isk is a significant sum starting out and allows you to purchase expensive skill books and implants early.

One concern players sometimes have is that they have already started an account and they don't want to loose that weeks worth of training, but by being able to afford +3 implants immediately you make up that difference in lost training in little over a month.

Anyone with an ingame account can send you an invite. I'm happy to send you one myself (send me you email address) and give you 250M isk when you subscribe (standing offer for anyone else interested).

Official rewards for buddy invites thread over in EVE New Citizens Q&A (bizarre, I know, since it's more relevant to trials)

Check the offers out before making up your mind Blink

The only problem is that you have to trust the person involved - best is if he/she gives you the ISK before you subscribe.
It leaves room for scamming so better get some references or someone you trust.

Best read the abovementioned thread.

As per the thread, any offers made in conjunction with buddy invites are considered to be affecting new subscriptions, and therefore scamming is not allowed.

There is a easy and straightforward solution to leaving evidence for enforcement.

Making the promise of isk (or whatever), in return for the recruitment benefit, in a evemail.

You can not tamper with evemails, so that leaves a audit trail as long as you don't delete that mail when you get it.
So basically, if the offering party renegs, then at the very least they get the prize taken away and might also get a taste of the banstick.

Be sure to check the authenticity of the recruitment offer (which you will receive through e-mail, not evemail), dont click on just anything.
If the offer is genuine, the mail will be sent from CCP, not from anyone else.
