Earth and Beyond, Free MMO

Earth and Beyond is an old MMO from Westwood Studios that went out of business. I recently learned that some people had made an emulator and always wanting to try Earth and Beyond I thought what the hell. Lo and behold I find myself playing Earth and Beyond on a Server with other people.

You have to make a forum account before an E&B Account to play. Here are the Download Instructions.

For those of you who do not know the Game it is a relatively large MMO with good graphics and lots of content. You play as a character and customize your Spaceship as you play through the game.

The game is free to play. There is no Cash Shop, Subscriptions or Micro Transactions. The Game is funded by Donations. It is not MMO "free" but Literally Free to Play.

Earth and Beyond has a low population but you can help with that.

Groovy.

I can get to be the galaxy's shortest Progen Warrior (again) and spend hours farming Boggeril for the banjo loot drops.

I don't think I personally could go back to ENB after EVE... it'd seem awfully small now and the thin entertainment of strutting my stuff down at the Jenquai disco paled long ago. In fact, I think the only thing we had in ENB that I'd like to see in EVE is ship colour customisation and walking in ******* stations... the rest of it... not so much.

ENB RIP.

Meh, I am enjoying tinkering around with it. I find it hilarious that they have completed walking in stations. I also like the Warp Drive which can take off in any direction.

I never played ENB, how is it? And how is the community for the emulator version of it, alive and well?

ENB is a big MMO. 2nd or 3rd largest Space MMO. It is very different from EVE Online though.

The Community is very small, haven't gotten to know them yet. 150ish average people Online.

Seeing as it is free it is worth a try. It won't replace EVE for me but it is another game for me to play when I am bored.

I'll have to play when I'm not horribly busy.

Warp to anywhere eh? That means no camps. Do they have exploration or is it "grind & spiders"?

This was a most awesome game. Glad to have played while it was out.

Yes they do. Apparently exploration is a big part of the game. I leveled up on Exploring alone. I don't know a lot of details I just started.

Earth & Beyond has similar scaling in the Universe, you feel space is BIG not just a game level. ENB has a lot of things similar to EVE but they are definitely not the same game.

From Wiki:

"Earth and Beyond is played by controlling either a humanoid or spaceship avatar in the third person.

Each game server, or Universe, consists of 12 main star systems. Each system contains multiple sectors. Warp gates are used to travel from sector to sector, and system to system.

Players create a character by choosing one of the three races, and one of three professions: Warrior, Explorer or Trader. Characters gain three types of experience: Combat experience is gained through fighting and completing combat jobs (being incapacitated results in "EXP Debt" and the character only receives half of the normal experience until the debt is repaid), Trade experience is gained from selling loot, by building items and by taking trade jobs, and Exploration experience is gained by from visiting navigation points and exploration jobs. In general each system has a number of "nav points". Visiting a nav point for the first time gives a certain amount of exploration experience. After a nav point is visited, it appears on the "radar" when the player is in the system.

Player's ships are constructed from a reactor, shield and engine. Optionally, a ship may have weapons or other devices that may buff or debuff other ships. Ship equipment can be reverse-engineered, rebuilt and enhanced. Player-made items could have better stats than dropped or purchased items, depending on the skill of the builder.

There were several varieties of boss spawns: Some were activated after a certain number of lower level monsters were killed, while others were time-based. For example, the Crystal Daeva, which produced valuable loot, had a spawn time of 72 hours. Nearly all bosses carried valuable and rare loot, which could be sold for significant amounts of cash on the in-game market.

Some sectors had areas where "Invasions" were staged. Sectors like Aragoth Prime contained a heavily defended Red Dragon base that was surrounded by multiple layers of defense turrets, carriers, battle cruisers, and frigates. Invasions often involved a multitude of clans joined together to attack the base and a huge battle would ensue."

The people who got this running are really doing an amazing job.

A game not at all like Eve besides the flying spaceships thing. It's a lot of fun, more fun than Eve right now.

Thanks for the info, I've checked up on the emulator a few times but it wasn't particularly playable at the time. I first began eve shortly after the EnB shutdown was announced. It'll be fun shooting down space broccoli once more for old times sake.

Must correct one thing for OP. Westwood Studios did not went out of business, it was sold to EA.

The MMO was made by Westwood and the MMO went out of business.

Westwood was bought in 1998 and ceased to exist as a separate entity from EA in 2003.

Earth and Beyond was created by Westwood in 2002 when it was operating separately and E&B went out of Business in 2004.

My statement that Earth and Beyond is an old MMO from Westwood Studios that went out of business is correct. Since E&B did go out of business and Westwood created it.
