.......because what I've come across so far isn't very flattering shall we say.

Not even the fan ones.

Should I post the worst first so that the the more middle-of-the-road seem more positive ?

Post the worst and make it look as bad as possible, just to remove those remaining shreds of doubt I have over my decision not to watch it. (I'm quite the Trekker)

FT Diomedes: "Reaver, sometimes I wonder what you are thinking when you sit down to post."

Frostys Virpio: "We have to give it to him that he does put more effort than the vast majority in his idea but damn does it sometime come out of nowhere."

Alrighty then.

The emergent theme that seems to be manifesting amongst the reviews negative, middle, and positive is that JJ Abrams did such a bang-up job the first time around with giving the original cast and scenario a fresh new start in an alternate universe where they could forget all about the canon that was all too familiar.

Unfortunately, this one does nothing but recall and immerse itself in that very canon........especially from the 2nd Star Trek film, which we all know the title of. Even using the same lines of dialogue in some cases. It just doesn't make much sense considering the success of the 2009 film at all. It's almost as if the filmmakers are afraid of "boldly going where no one has gone before" after having already successfully done so once.

For me, this just bodes ill for anything truly fresh in Abrams' upcoming Star Wars film, be we shall see about that in 2 years.

Here is the worst.
Keep in mind THIS IS A FAN, NOT A PROFESSIONAL PAID CRITIC. And WARNING: Massive Spoilers. No secrets here.

This one is kinder, but still: " there's little sense of style, no grace notes or flights of imagination. " http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie/star-trek-darkness/review/451154

This one has "This sequel starts in the same confident frame of mind, but after around 45 minutes it finds a comfortable spot on the edge of Klingon space, plonks itself down and reverts to old bad habits." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/star-trek/10032429/Star-Trek-into-Darkness-review.html

Finally, this is the most positive. "People are unlikely to charge out of the cinema with quite the same level of glee as they did in 2009; but this is certainly an astute, exhilarating concoction." http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/may/01/star-trek-into-darkness

Wow that's pretty harsh. I'm almost surprised they could find 4 reviewers who both knew anything about Star Trek and could be paid to write a seemingly positive review with their name on it.

Definitely glad I didn't watch it. It sounds like it's actually a lot worse than I expected it to be.

It really ties into that Soderbergh speech I linked yesterday. Every film, especially expensive ones, now has to follow some kind of rote beat, with reminder points of previous films/original versions. Must be safe. This is technically just a rethink of "Wrath of Khan".

Even the posters for this film and all the other big summer films could literally be switched out for one another with facial and font replacements using Photoshop.

Sorry I sound so grim, but it's just getting really really bad.

Film used to be fun. I know. "I Was There" for Star Wars in 77.

Same here, I've never missed a Star Trek film, no matter how dire.

Who was the best Captain, my choice is Picard Patrick Stewart), closely followed by Kirk (William Shatner), both characters were a product of their time.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I loved DS 9, but was never really a fan of all the other Star Trek franchise.
Maybe Eve is the wrong game for me then?

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

I remember my thread about that last year and I think we were DS9's only defenders.

Possible, yes.

DS9 and Farscape were the only Science Fiction shows I actually enjoyed.

I'll see it as well more than likely. I'm just glad to know ahead of time that I won't leave the theater nearly as elated and amazed as last time.

The only back to back examples I can remember of that happening was Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back and Alien/Aliens.

When you go to see it think of ghost rider 2 and Eragon. You will enjoy star trek a lot more.

Ugh, seriously??

Well, I'll see it regardless. Maybe I'll wait until it hits Netflix.

Oh, and Krixtal, I was there in '77 for the original Star Wars as well. Has anyone heard if they've done a sequel to it? Blink

Of course the have, they made even a bunch of sequels.

First came "Star Wars: Reloaded" and "Star Wars: Revolutions".
Later sequels were "Star Wars: San Andreas", "Star Wars: Tokyo Drift"

JJ Abrams will direct a new sequel, it will be called "Star Wars- The Search for Spock"

I'll still watch it despite what anyone thinks.

Oh and still waiting for something that can top or even come close to 2001: A Space Odyssey but I doubt that will ever happen.
