I don't know. Sometimes when you deal with voice chats, its hard to change personalities. Which is why I am nice in voice chat, but hateful on the forums.

If you can be a ass on voice comms, I bet you could be an ass in real life too.

You might be able to pull it if off with bi-polor or multi-personality disorders, but people true nature shows when they are talking person to person.

That said, I've seen plenty of trolls on voice comms. They get kicked and banned fairly quickly. People don't want to put up with the stuff we put up with on the forums.

While you jest, i do think of it as CCP providing something of a social service. I deal with some very unsavory people everyday then come home and rather than taking it out on the wife, the kids, the neighbors etc, i blow of steam by shooting real people with imaginary space guns .or more likely these days, but shooting dozens upon dozens of NPCs.

Shooting the NPCs isn't as satisfying (it's like being a vampire surviving off of cows blood instead of tasty humans lol), but unlike humans, the NPCs rarely warp off and the never post at Something Awful Twisted

It's partially the players and partially CCP.

The players speak up, and CCP actually listens. They have gone to great lengths to foster this kind of game and this kind of community. That's not to say the CCP doesn't screw up, but the level of back an forth between CCP and the players is above and beyond any other game that I can think of.

As for people being jerks, well, it's an MMO in which the devs give you a chance to actually be a jerk, not just gank lowbies for kicks. Some people are just going to run with it. Some of them really are a**holes, but a lot of them are just regular folks.

I was an NCO for a long time... I've always got a can of 'Instant A-Hole' in my hip pocket. 'Tis a useful thing to have - even if you don't need it very often. That includes on voice comms too, when- and as-needed.
