I'm trying to get a feel for EVE and would like some input from others who have been there, done that; Is the point of exploration to go to the outer reaches without getting ganked by enemy NPCs and PvPers as I had really wanted to wander out farther than I even dared, to find some far out locales if not uncharted territories. Dreams. Thanks!

Exploration does not mean you are immune to ganking. However, seeing as you will be in less traveled space, the chances of being ganked will likely be reduced.

Exploration is useful because you are able to find mining sites which are unused, abandoned stations you can loot (I'm sure you've come across them on the training missions, they look all smashed up and float sideways!) as well as things like gasclouds people can mine.

The point of exploration is to make isk in a less grindy, low brow, obvious manner compared to running missions, while being less boring. Nothing more, nothing less. You can/will still get killed by npc and players, it just takes them more effort to get to you (and that is probably going to be changed, you can thank CCP Greyscale for the slaughter that'll ensue when he makes scanning hilariously simple and fast).

Compared to running missions it's actually more PVP-like as you're competing with others for the sites and phat lewt.

You are more than welcome to wander as deep into wormhole space as you can :)

Or you could wait until after the Odyssey Expansion, when all exploration sites won't have NPC ships guarding them.

However, you can still be ganked by some one who wants your stuff.

I've been thinking the same, but using the map to show low-sec sites with few jump and even fewer ship/pod kills.

I do, however need a very good T2 Probe ship, and top of the line scanning equipment, before I even think about stepping out of my hisec comfort zone.

Staying in hi-sec is mostly boring, I actually think it's a ton of fun navigating around low sec avoiding hostiles and ninja looting the radars and mag sites in my trusty imicus before the npc's wreck the poor thing. I've lost a few ships both to players and npc pirates but I've paid for them several times over.
