Hi all,

Im not a new player, but considering ive almost only done industry and market, im quite the rookie, when it comes to flying. Pirate

So, any one you have some good pointers, links to youtubes, and guides, all regarding exploration?

I did try to find some good info, but almost every site, have the idea that you at least know something about the subject, thus throwing me off, with even more questions that I had when entering the sites. So.. I want the cruel basics, from what skills to train, what ship to buy, what fit to use, and where to go :D

My objective would be to begin immidiatly start training for a good allround exploration ship fitting, regardless of race-type, and in the end, be able to make a living, flying alone to unknown sites and learn the tricks of the trade.

Thanks a bunch.

If you go to the Help dialog, you should find Exploration Career Agents who will give you the basic equipment and skillbooks you'll need to get started (the basic skills are Astrometrics, Archaeology, Hacking, and Salvaging). I believe that towards the end of the exploration career missions, you'll also get a frigate optimized for exploration.

Exploration's getting reworked for the Odyssey expansion, though, so you may end up having to learn things all over again come June.

There's a fair degree of choice for scanning ships.
Some are specialised for the role, others are used due to their versatility.
Covert Op's, Tengu, Gila etc.

Whilst things are being changed in Odyssey, there are some aspects that won't be.
You'll still need the base scanning skills, so consider training them to a reasonable level in the meantime.

I recommend getting Astrometrics, Astrometrics Pinpointing and Rangefinding up to help with the scanning. Fitting one of the frigates with a scan bonus helps as well. Also using the Sisters of Eve probes/launcher. The launcher will set you back 50m or so, and probes usually 400k-600k per.

I'm sure EveU has a ton of info in the wiki concerning individual sites, and as far as scanning, youtube has good tutorials on probing (it is what I used to learn).

Sir Livingston (JonnyPew) has several guides out for exploration currently. Granted, they'll be out of date when the exploration changes go in, but until then, they'll be plenty useful.

(His "all-in-one" ship setups are pretty neat, actually.)

Thank you Cameron Zero

I'll be covering all the exploration changes coming in the Odyssey expansion as well. Someone has gotta do it Blink

My Imicus set-up is very similar to Sir Livingston's. That little ship works great for running low sec mag and radar sites. The ability to throw out four Hobs is what puts it over the top in my opinion. In fact I have been meaning to slip a cap recharger in my fit. Thanks for the reminderLol

Running low-sec sites is a great way to pass the time and make good ISK for entry and more experienced players. The investment is modest, the risks are reasonably small. If I were to chide Sir Livingston for anything, once he has landed on site he should have his D-scan up and running to make sure no-one is scanning him or his site down. But that's just my pvp paranoia kicking in.

BTW. His videos are the best in my opinion. I am looking forward to seeing how the new changes affect us. That new mini game seems interesting, the chance to lose cans worth tons of ISK makes me both nervous and excited. I will wait to pass judgment until I see how its implemented.

The best thing to do with exploration is to... do it.

Start in highsec in one of the scanning frigates:

Amarr - Magnate
Caldari - Heron
Gallente - Imicus
Minmatar - Probe

Put a couple small gravity capacitor upgrade I rigs (+10% scan strength bonus per) and you're off to the races. This means you'll need jury rigging I.

The skills that you will need are all the skills with Astrometric in the name so in this order of initial value:

Astrometrics
Astrometric Rangefinding
Astrometric Pinpointing
Astrometric Acquisition

All of these skills are worthwhile bringing to IV but you can start exploration at Astrometrics II and if you are really into exploration bring them to V. Just be aware that Astrometric Rangefinding is a "difficulty" 8 skill so bringing it to V takes awhile (with base attributes not remapped and no implants it takes 39 days).

There are some great guides out there for how to do exploration and how quickly you can get into it. Plus, if you want to see how quickly exploration can become 'profitable' check out: http://explorationalmanac.blogspot.ca/2010/06/preface.html

It's from 2010 but, for the most part, it is still accurate although Odyssey will be making some significant changes making it no longer as relevant.

I've been here going a little over a month and have made most of my money exploring new eden in my trusty imicus, and having great fun ninjaing low sec radar sites and getting out before the bigger npc ships wreck the poor thing I make more money than I lose imicus so all good so far, the only advice I have for someone new to it is never sit in one spot for too long as I found out today when I lost my mornings loot to some folks in molden heath.

I'm also trying EVE (again). Hopefully this time I will continue playing trough the trial and not give up after 4 hours.

I want to be an Explorer mainly because I don't want to be forced to play in Group.... so being an explorer means you can play solo.
I also like the idea of exploring hidden stuff and finding gems.

Any new advices?

I'm starting to train Astrometrics & co. But what else? What will I do when I finally finish the tutorial?
