If you've watched any of fanfest you will have noticed the recurring theme that CCP is really trying to get their shite together, after running everything by the seat of their pants for so long. They learned this the hard way after trying to do something as huge as WIS.

There is no goal more important than making game attractive for millions of new players. And like 100% of existing players if done right.

Clearly WiS is most interesting EVE feature at the moment (if not ever). At least I didn't see hundreds-message long threads about any other feature on these forums and new threads kicking in almost weekly. If CCP management was smart enough to make public voting for new features (like SOE did with Planetside 2) - WiS would be on top.

I sympathize and agree with the OP but, as many of the above snarky responses indicate,we'll never be able to have a rational discussion on WIS in these forums. Hell, one of the more dismissive replies was from a future CSM delegate who supposedly was going to listen to concerns of all different types of players and communicate them to CCP. Yeah, sure...Roll

I just think it's ironic that the very people who are always so fast to criticize others about being afraid of change and to "adapt or die" don't seem to be able to follow their own advice when it comes to considering that other styles of play are as valid as theirs.

I can confirm that my internet spaceships experience would be greatly enriched by being chased buck naked through a station from the clone vat to my CQ, by a gang of heavily armed dust mercenaries who have been hired to ventilate my face.

Edit: Also, being killed in the crossfire while walking to Waterstones* to buy my skillbook would also be a spiffing wheeze of an example of emergent gameplay.

This is serious business, CCP should stop developing EvE, and focus on a futuristic Sims/Dressup Online game !!!! That's what WE the players demand.

Incarna was shelved as the result of a realization- players don't associate themselves with pixel avatars.

There is no more link to a 3D humanoid character than there is to a spaceship- neither is what being a capsuleer is all about. Instead of artificial representation or a simple reflection, capsuleers in EVE Online are more- our characters are the sum of our actions, history, reputation, statistics and concrete social relationships with real people sharing a virtual universe, real relationships which are created by text and voice communication.

This is why adding avatar interaction does not add real value to the universe. There simply isn't anything that avatars in a virtual room can replace, or even add to social communication delivered with voice and text. They can't (as of 2013) speak in body language, and at the current technological level they are subpar even to 2D portraits- I can express myself with the portrait creator by manipulating the pose and lighting, in a shared room I'd be just a clumsy character moving as the animator intended, no matter how many polygons or how advanced shading is used to produce it. There simply isn't enough control to make avatars behave naturally enough to accompany our message, which will be delivered either by typing or speaking.

Perhaps in 10 years, but today we're not even close yet.

Of course opening WiS would expand the gameplay options and add another layer to the virtual universe, but this is detached from the associative motives presented in the OP.

Far from it this is my trading account, I'm mainly 0.0 pvp and an undocking alliance!

There was some figure that I can't find from fanfest that mentions something like 50% of players play solo, I guess that's mainly a choice of play styles but it's also a pity. I think if the immersion was from the get go it could make a massive difference to new players first impressions of the game, that immersion is stunted by any barriers. For new players their first interactions with the game and other players are via local and a shut door.

The constant buddy invite promotions only make this failing even more frustrating, why would I invite my friends to play this game and then consign them to the abject boredom of spending most of their online time kicking around a 10x10 cell when we can go off and play dozens of far more engaging games where I can see them in a far more personalised form running free and interacting in the same environment that I am?

If you're spending "most of your time" in the captain's quarters, you're playing the WRONG game.

Every time I create a new account, I leave that stupid walking in station bit for my hangar first thing every time,
and I have yet to go back to it ever again. Which is as it should be.

Yeah, no. It wouldn't. Those "hundreds of message long threads" are from random noobs who launched the EVE client instead of the Second Life client, and 90% of the hundreds of messages in them are people saying "Yeah, No." while a few dieharders continue to cling to it.

OP aside, consider WIEVRS (Walking In EvE Virtual Reality Stations)... perhaps on you way to the fighter bay if nothing else. Smile

You can certainly keep on believing that if it makes you feel better. Financial and technological realities will always prevail.
