Please fix the broken targetting/firing issue

There have always been lots of threads about fixing various in-game issues, but why does no-one ever bring up the most obvious fail in the game...

If I, in ship A, target another Ship B, and Ship C is actually in a direct line between us, then my weapons will still hit ship B, whereas they should only hit ship C. WTF?

There is no reason whatsoever (no game lore, no 'jovian' physics) that suggests that the real rules of physics can be subverted in this way, so please can we have this fixed now?

Fixing this would help miners especially since they should be able to hide behind 'roids and so on, but would also make pvp less predictable - no more warp to 0, lock, fire, pop!

This is definitely what should happen. Flying a small ship into and through an asteroid field should be a defence and so on and so forth, it may be hard coding or whatever but PLEASE let this be...

Trust me, I almost know what I'm doing.

In theory you are absolutely correct. In practise it would generate intolerable levels of lag.

Don't get me wrong, on a small scale it could be easily done, but the same code that drives your small mining op in a belt also has to work for a 2000 person fleet battle.

problem is that all this physics *must* be calculated on the server. (Line of sight) collision detection between N points is quite computational intensive and grows dramatically with growing N.

for the same reason there are no longer AOE weapons since they had the same problem.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

even if it could be implemented this would break lots things ingame...

also roids and stations should prevent weapons fire from passing through them

The calculations required for that would probably bring on so much lag its not even funny.
They would not only have to keep track of
1. Your ship
2. All Other Ships
3. All your drones + all other drones
4. New objects - every bullet - every line of site of each bullet and missile.... and so on.

That would not only kill the lag on the game but also all the information taht would constnatly have to be passed back and forth between the clients and servers thus increasing bandwith on your side too.

I like the idea, but since I think that would be virtually impossible I vote no.

Realism =/= Fun.

Eve is not a fighter sim or a FPS, having to deal with things like LOS wouldn't work in Eve, and would be horrible.

The rounds from Eve weapons fire down micro-warp tunnels, thus letting them shoot through objects, in much the same way that ships can warp through stations and planets.

Missiles, however, are just magic.

Wait...what? Did CCP take away Smartbombs and Bombs from the game?

When did this happen?

god could you imagine the result to the AI?
suddenly the not-so-hot-as-it-is pathing code just up and dies as it has to plot around LOS obstructions

not to mention friendly fire and LOS griefing.

oh hell no

That is not a bug or an issue to be honest, it's simply how the game is, this game is not a free firing shoot-em-up like a FPS, the mechanics of combat in EVE just don't really allow for that.

itt: I want to play sims in space.

Give it up. Also, you are perfectly welcome to fly your frigate through an asteroid belt to escape a BS. I guarantee it won't follow you through. Won't stop him from shooting at you though. Or just warping to the other side if he has the bm/fleet-mate available.

While it would be cool, it would melt the servers, having to calculate hit detections on every object on grid every time someone fires.
