My question is what drones are generically best used in missions dps wise hobgoblins, hammerheads or what. i am not concerned about drones been good or bad in missions or anywhere else for that matter, just interested in which ones i should carry on me. dunno if it matters but they will used with my cnr and missiles.

thanks

I tend to stick with Hobgoblins, but you could do the same as ammo and take the drone that does the right damage type for each mission; that's a bit of a faff on though. I CBA with Hammerheads or Ogres, anything that's bigger than a Frigate I tend to destroy with TPs and CMs.

with the current drone aggro mechanics, light drones will only be attacked by elite frigates and cruisers whereas bigger drones attract aggro from other rats. in addition, medium and heavy drones are slower than lights, so killing frigates will often take longer. for anything bigger than frigates, you have your main weapons anyway, so from an efficiency point of view, lights are the way to go.

I should buy an Ishtar.

My standard CNR carries 5x hobs (best damage for a light, even account for resists) and 3x bouncers (best tracking/dmg for drone control range). Good for pegging BCs whilst you shoot other things.

What do you do when your 5 hobs pop? Carry more than 5 hobs...

If they pop you either haven't been paying attention or have very poor drones skills.

I sell drones and drones accessories.

Sentries I use Wardens until they get close enough for Gardes.

sentries are very good if you match the damage type to what rats you're facing. Conveniently, these rats will orbit you at ranges pretty much within the optimal of the specific sentry.

For ex max skilled garde with 2 tech2 omnis hits to just under 50km and serpentis battleships like to orbit at 37-50

It depends very much on whether your drones are your primary or secondary weapons. As secondary weapons, Hobgoblins are good general-purpose drones; they have the best damage multiplier, and it's rare to find an enemy that has thermal as its peak resist. Warriors are popular secondary weapons for PVP because of their speed, though they're not the best against shield-tankers' natural explosive resists.

Hornets are good against kinetic-weak opponents, with the advantage that most of their tank is in their shields, so they'll recover their hit points on their own. I've seen the numbers run here and there, and against adversaries like the Guristas, Caldari drones out-perform Gallente, but not overwhelmingly so.

I don't know if there are circumstances where Amarr drones are the best choice.

Now if you're talking about drones as primary weapon systems, then sentries work very well - Gardes for short range, Wardens or Bouncers for longer range depending on what you're shooting at.

I lay down fury like a vengeful god using the holy fire of precision cruise missiles.

The hobgoblins are like little cheerleaders, they don't actually DO anything, but are a nice little entourage to have.

And from that I have finally figured out a way to properly exploit the crap out the broken anti-drone AI that CCP added. It's simple!

First, get a ship with a small drone bay (25m3 will do) and load it down with every DPS module you can think of; think "gank ship" and focus entirely on DPS and nothing else. No defense, don't bother because you won't need it... at all.

I learned the hard way that regardless of mission level, rat size, or drone size, that the second you launch drones that every rat on the screen is going to drop whatever it was doing and attack the drones and nothing else. This was quite frustrating but then... I realized that this could be exploited for laughs & profit.

See, I realized that drones are no longer actual weapons. What they are now is PvE specific Target Spectrum Breakers that can work on any ship. And with that in mind the new strategy is simple: Grab something like a Talos (overblown DPS, weak defense) and just keep launching and recalling your drones at roughly eight second intervals and the AI will never actually fire at anything.

They'll start to target you, oh wait there's drone, everyone switch target to the - oh wait, they were recalled, ok back to targeting the player ship OH look they launched drones again must target drones cannot resist oh wait they're gone again guess we should target that ship agai- oh wait, drones, drop everything! Gotta get those dron- oh they docked again, back to the... wait drones! Quick get the - recalled? Ok target the...

You'll keep the new genius AI programming spinning in circles and unable to get a real fix on anything. Meanwhile you'll be nuking them off the screen left and right with impunity and devoid of any fear of actual retaliation - because you've got mad drone exploit skills. Woot!
